I am so excited by this news!

But concerned that it will fail after all.

Musicmystery -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 1:23:04 PM)

So are they. That's a lot of pressure, and if the pipe is compromised, we could have multiple leaks through the sea floor instead of one.

Either way, it's not "fixed" until the relief wells are done and the well sealed with mud and concrete, however this works.

Hopefully it can at least stop the hemorrhage.

Lucylastic -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 1:43:04 PM)

Heres hoping things go well(pun not intended)

Moonhead -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 1:51:56 PM)

Myself, I'm a bit narked this talk about a gas bubble turned out to be utter crap. That would have been entertaining, wouldn't it?

Lucylastic -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 1:52:55 PM)

yeah but we are both sick phuqs ... ah well maybe next crisis

"Now begins a waiting period to see if the cap can hold the oil without blowing a new leak in the well. Engineers will monitor pressure readings incrementally for up to 48 hours before reopening the cap while they decide what to do."

So, apparently it's only stoped for two days. Hmm sounds like huge success to me....(sarcasm)

In all good disaster movies there is a calm before the storm.

This done to contrast how life was to how it becomes. Also I've noted quite often there is a seemingly insignificant news story running in the background.

mnottertail -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 1:57:40 PM)

well they have to open it up so that the cement angle well doesnt blow up.

Lucylastic -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 1:58:54 PM)

more pessimism than sarcasm..considering its been going on for how many days now?? two is a lot better than constant leak...baby steps....

If anyone has run a long water hose,they`ll know about force,weight and momentum of liquids.Multiply those factors by the thousands,tens of thousands of gallons and PSI and one can see the challenge.It`s like stopping a freight train with just a just few brakes.The breaks can/will hold and eventually stop the train but if you apply to much stopping force,you might blow the breaks and have none.

The flow must be shut ever so slowly to prevent the thousands of liquid pounds traveling with great speed volume and force from blowing the pipe out again,bringing us back to square one.

There is also great concern and focus on sub-seabed leaks.The "top kill" attempt indicated that there were possible openings in the pipe hundreds of feet below the ocean floor.

It's alright. No worries! If the test does run the entire 48 hours, they're not going to just let the oil start vomiting back into the ocean at  the end of it. That article could have been better-worded. If all goes well, when the test is concluded they'll just crack the valves back open to relieve the pressure and pipe the oil up to the production barges. Barring any problems, the leak is effectively stopped from this point on.

ElectraGlide -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 2:41:37 PM)

How did they stop the leak, did they use Rush Limbaugh's big mouth to seal it with. It is nice to know that the whole crisis never interrupted The Presidents vacation schedule.

mnottertail -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 2:44:08 PM)

I would think they would have to crack it open when they drill in the angle well for the cement plug, to relieve the pressure when they hit the well, or thats going to be a big blowback thru that well.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 2:44:57 PM)

He is now 2 over par, before the crisis he was 1 over par.

The crisis has had a big impact on all concerned.

ElectraGlide -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 2:47:13 PM)

I was watching the Jimmy Buffet Gulf Coast Beach Concert last night, I kept looking for tar balls in the background washing up on the beach. The camera was not focused closed enough to see.

The evidance is out there...

I hadn't thought of that until you mentioned it, but that's an interesting point. I'll have to ask my friends who are plugged into the oil industry down there.

My first inclination is that at 15,000 feet below the mudline, and just a few hundred feet above the top of the reservoir, the pressure won't be significantly affected by a 2-foot diameter outlet valve 3 miles above the point of intersection. But I may be wrong. I'll ask some oil company engineers, and get back with what they tell me. Wait here, OK?

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 3:25:20 PM)

Perhaps with the cement plug they can maintain a backpressure as they drill whereas with plain drilling they don't typically do so?

We know it's basically make it up as you go along because if they had a plan it wouldn't have taken 80 plus days to fix it.

Are they going to incorporate this cap with 'partial relief values' on all future drilling expeditions? Seems like a pretty straightforward idea to gradually increase the pressure, why it wasn't incorporated to the original BOP is uncertain.

The original BOP design operation was to clamp down and crush the pipe stopping the flow immediately. If it had occurred to them at the time that the leaky hosepipe analogy would have been an issue then I don't see how this would have been the ideal design operation of the BOP.

xXsoumisXx -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 3:35:27 PM)

ok my mistake, oil leak is politics and religion.. not off topic [;)]

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: Oil flow stopped!? (7/15/2010 3:37:58 PM)

Off-topic is for asking questions such as: "Hey what is this lump on my foot, should I squeeze it and see what comes out?"
