Collectors are under a great deal of pressure from their managers and management to collect those debts and clear the accounts if they want to keep their jobs. The collectors will do whatever they have to do to get the money. I guess the FTC can take away the collection agency license so they can't make any more telephone calls. Bill

I'm really surprised judges are putting people in jail for not paying their debts. I may be wrong but I don't think they can do that - they must be republican judges.

they mention the letters not getting to the defendants, they miss their day in court so they get a bench warrant...failure to appear. shouldnt happen, hope this stops it

Well.... not to defend the practice, because it's despicable, but that's not exactly what's happening. What's happening is that the collection agencies are suing the debtors, and the debtors are ignoring the judgments and court orders. That's illegal, and that's what they're being jailed for.

But the article said that some people didn't have any debts; others were unaware that they had a collection company after them. I had that happen to me for $75 from a medical provider where I used to live. They had a hiccup in their billing system that showed non-payment; I'd paid every single bill they sent me. They sent the bill to a collection company. Even though I left forwarding info through the phone company and had a valid forwarding address, those hosers at the collection agency never notified me. I didn't find out about this until I applied for a mortgage. That stupid $75 trashed my credit for 7 years.

This has been brought up before. All they have to do is impose a fine for non appearance. Then if you don't pay the fine you are in contempt of court. What to do now ? T

Years ago I got a threatening notice from a collection agency about something that I didn't owe. I wrote back asking for the documentation, and never heard another word. Total shakedown scam.
