The article is a report on a step in the flight testing process. I think the image alone says a lot more.

The chances of me ever having the spare $200,000 for a ride are pretty much identical to my chances of winning the lottery, but the technology, the step forward, the potential of this, are just so much fun.

It looks like they really wanted to build seven planes, but at the end realised they only had two wings.  We live in lean times indeed.  Heh.

Still.  I buy the argument that it does qualify as a space-plane and not a glorified airplane.  Whether or not it'll lead to something useful in the future, though, is anyone's guess.  The French/UK's 'Concorde' plane was considered the absolute pinnacle of technology when it was first produced but was scrapped a few years ago - to the wails of tech lovers - because it had become commercially useless.  I also ended up hating it because, for every individual who enjoyed travelling in it,
there were thousands who got woken up by its noisy engines as it travelled from London to Paris and back.

It wasn't the engine noise that doomed Concorde. It was the sonic booms along the flight path. In recent years, there have been some productive experiments towards turning down the impact of that.

Gawd.  Would I care if it was Concorde's engines or the sonic booms that the plane produced?  It still woke me up.

I just used to imagine a bunch of fat, arrogant, selfish twats sitting in the plane not giving a crap if they woke up the whole of southern Britain.  I was glad to see the aircraft junked.  It was decades behind the times, philosophically speaking.  Concorde was a political, social, economic and ecological embarrassment.

There's no future in being technologically brilliant, but philosophically cretinous, these days.  I do think scientists need to wake up and smell the coffee regards that point.

Or maybe people should be a bit more selective in the choice of housing, especially if they plan to sleep late, huh, Peo?
