.... a horticulturally wise person's advice.

I have a couple of open spots on one of my fence lines, and was wondering what would make a good tree/plant? One of the main spots I'm looking at is in shade predominantly, would a crepe myrtle flourish there, I wonder?

I use Carolina Jasmine out here in my neck of the woods, also honeysuckle and wild roses, though I don't know how they would fare  in shade. I have no experience with crepe myrtle...Good luck!

I'm not a horticulturist ( I actually don't do well with blooming plants at all...) but what about azaela?  They come in several colors, and I THINK that they can grow fairly tall.  Or maybe hyacinthia? (I think that's what they are called.. blue-ish, multiple blooms.. my Grandparents used to have them and the plants would grow to about 5' or so )

Kitty, did you mean a hydrangea? We had some where I grew up, and azaleas are very popular here, too.

Rosalyn, I googled the jasmines, they're pretty.

Crepe myrtles usually prefer sun than shade. Are you looking for something that is evergreen or is deciduous okay?

No, it doesn't have to be evergreen, th.

While we're here, does anyone have any opinions on non-bearing pear trees? Not the sturdiest of trees, but pretty, and they seem to grow well. I was thinking of one in my front yard, full sun.

There's no way we can answer until you tell us how high it can grow, and how much diameter the branches can have when full grown.

sorry, talked to mom.. it was forsythia.  Yellow, not blue.  Dunno where I was thinking of that the blooms were blue, unless it was the trellis of Morning Glory.

Japanese Maples are pretty, but I dont know how well they'd meet your needs...

Azaleas are perhaps the best "low maintenance" plant/tree/bush, (depending on pruning)
and the color of flower selection is spectacular!

when I don't know what to plant... I plan Ivy.

If it was a Stone wall I would plant Hens and Chicks.

If you can get fruit to grow and have a good Humid area ... Try a Lowquat Tree.

Hi Level,

Please give us more details about your site and what it is you are looking for.
I understand that the site is mostly in the shade, and you are wanting to place your prospective plant along a fence.
Do you want a tree or a shrub?
Does it matter to your neighbors if this plant overhangs their own property? Or will they plan to whack their side of it?
Are you looking primarily for flowers, fruit, or simply coverage of the fence?
How much space are you looking to cover with this plant-- both vertically and horizontally?
Are you interested in an evergreen or a deciduous?
In what part of the country is your plant going to be located? What is the climate zone there?

All of these considerations must be answered, and a few more, must be addressed before the appropriate choice can be narrowed down.

Poise, I'm indeed leaning towards azaleas.

subway and Steven, I'll go out there shortly and get a ballpark measurement.

Hibbie, I don't want to put up a privacy fence, with all the trees I've got back there, and with his fence being right on the property line, it'd be hard to get one there.

QSM, that loquat tree looks interesting, and yes, it's very humid here.

The Fruit is quite Tasty too.

I just know they are a little pricey and they need to be wattered a LOT... If is almost worth putting in a drip line if you do not already have one and going with the 5g/h drip.
