NeedToUseYou -> RE: kill switch- 73,000 sites shut down NOW (7/17/2010 8:31:06 PM)

Hrmmm, are the nazi's coming? Or was there something else going on. I'll be watching this one, as taking down 73000 blogs because a few link to illegally posted material, seems way way extreme. If that is indeed the case, every site hosting user generated content could at anytime be shut down. Ebay, Google, Yahoo, Bing, Photobucket, etc.... All have illegal content, and or links to illegal content, in addition, the search engines "cache" most of the webpages they index, and offer them to end users, which is beyond me in distinction between copying a article and placing it on xyz.com and placing it in googles cache.

My guess there was something deeper happening, I've looked for more information but there at this time is zero information, as to why, only vague conjecture, because of past activity, but they don't state the actual reason.

I should hope that the sane people here defend the enforcement of IP laws. At least anyone who actually enjoys new entertainment and software.

That's not the issue, the question is, Is it okay to shut down a 72999 blogs because one is bad,  or Is it okay to shut down 72999 blogs because a 1000 are bad, or how about 2000, 5000.

The site was a free blog site, as in you just sign up and make a blog, the owner didn't make the 73000 blogs.

It would be like let's say this site, had one guy or a 100 or whatever make a profile and in that profile "linked" to an illegal movie, do you think the servers should be taken?

Anyway, it's to early to tell? Hopefully, it was for something way worse than random teenagers opening up free accounts and posting links to illegal material. As from what I've read, that is what happened on the service previously, and he complied with removing it.

Evil tho can take on a life of its own.- you are getting into what came first the chicken or the egg.

greed and lust for power- -- does it really matter what makes leaders tick?mans law, mans utupia would be a flawed one at best.

It is not do-able.I was fretting over hedge funds driving up the price of chocolate- - but are we really as advanced as we think we are.

My cat will kill a bird or rabbit because it can. So the elite wipe out peoples lives because they can.

Leave a bike all by itself in the city- if no one seems to own it what happens.

I was at the store today- noting all the cheap junk that falls apart. Guess what? We no longer buy gadgets- we buy ideas. The widget is an idea- with a few props. it falls apart into the trash cycle.

Ideas are owned. Know how is owned. Perplexing that we change for college- -- then consider copyright law. You can not even have ideas - 2010- as they are "property" - the ideas are right up there with the junk at the store- you are borrowing them and pay a toll

.73,000 blogs were shut down this week due to someone owning the ideas.

Some of the ideas in your head- in your life might actually even be pirated. Are you a pirate? Are you absolutely sure?do you own ALL the thoughts in your head, and in your life? If you do can you share these thoughts among friends? Being that reality junk is not real- it falls apart- you buy the IDEA of having a gadget- the physical item is simply a prop for the garbage cycle.

based on what is in your head, your house and your life- do you own all your ideas- or are there useage fees/tolls that are do. If you own the ideas in your head- then why cant you freely give away that idea?If you do own these ideas- then are you allowed to share them with loved ones like you would a hug?Can a hug be patented? If so- and we know a life form is in fact copyrighted- are you a hug pirate?

Isnt a hug tho more lasting then a gadget that is an idea- and a prop for the garbage stream. When you throw out trash you pay and recycle- but how do you dispose of ideas? You can not recycle/freecylce the idea- because that idea is owned. If crops can be patented- what about a technique that you are breathing right now. Could you be a pirate to the thought of breathing?

A life form enjoys a patent here in the US.The DNA geno project- corporations can patent YOUR gene- then charge you for the med- to undo the flawed gene.So lets say you are a flow stream of ideas. Do you freely flow and share your humaness like hugs for all? If you do- is this legal?Next time you are at a store- take a good look at the merchandise.

Isnt it really just an idea- a prop for the trash stream? You pay the toll to enjoy a few minutes of it.Shouldn't a chair toll be assessed on you for that chair you sit on. You read this post- and it is not my property- or even Mains property- it belongs to goldman sachs, and you may not enjoy it until you pay them.

You may not tell someone else this idea. You may not even keep said idea in your head- because "they" own it. Not you- not me.

well, I just site:blogetery.com in google and looked at a bunch of the cached pages.

While some were not linking to illegal stuff, it appears a very large percentage, at least those in googles cache, were, which is funny, since google is now hosting copied pages without express permission, of the pages filled with illegal links to content, however, it is impossible that the site owner did not know this, and he could have made a little database search to look for .rar files, or certain keyword combinations, to try to restrain the activity to some degree.

The whole thing seems bizarre, to me.

As the flow is
Illegal file is hosted on fileshare.com or some other site.
blogetery.com has pages that provide links to fileshare.com
and then google.com makes copies of blogetery.com, which are still available for anyone to view, using the cache.

Yet, in this chain, blogetery.com is removed wholly, yet fileshare.com remains (arguably, the vast majority of users, us fileshare.com for illegal files), and google.com continues to offer the pages, of copied material from blogetery.com.

Anyway, copyright law, seems quite arbitrary, or at least selective in enforcement to those companies of less than a 10's of millions in market cap.

This coming from the guy who got called some months back for repeatedly lifting entire copyrighted articles and re-posting them here verbatim in violation of the Terms of Service and intellectual property rights of the websites he plucked them from.

How can we get Prison Planet on that list?

It is just a beginning. Internet is a serious national security risk. The whole economical/political system of the USA is in danger of total collapse if a critical mass of people fully understand what is going on.  The movie "Matrix" had an inconvenient truth in it.

Jeffff -> RE: kill switch- 73,000 sites shut down NOW (7/18/2010 10:11:13 PM)

We are exceedingly vulnerable. So much of modern commerce and information flows across this motherfucker.

Care must be taken. Care must also be taken that it isn't an excuse to quash dissent.

http://news.cnet.com/8301-31001_3-20010877-261.html

Cnet got a statement stating the closure wasn't for copyright. Also another user generated site for forums apparently got shut down last week, under similar veiled conditions.

So, as is, the only confirmation was it wasn't copyright, I'd like to know why then. It seems to me that if one blog, or a few blogs even were doing something really bad, they could have just mirrored the hard drive, and deleted the offenders.

Anyway, who knows, I don't like unexplained seizures though, especially when it effects many innocents in a wide stroke.

pahunkboy -> RE: kill switch- 73,000 sites shut down NOW (7/19/2010 8:53:38 AM)

The powers that be ARE looking to get more serious about copyright.  some even want to get rid of "fair use".

CNET reports blogetry.com was shut down for Al Qaeda connections and bomb making tips.

It said "links to al-Qaeda materials were found on Blogetery's servers" that has an entirely different implied meaning that "Al Qaeda connections".

Apparently from the article, it was burst.net, that shut the server off, and then "feigned" it was ordered to shut down the server.

"In the FBI's letter, the agency included a clause that says Web hosts and Internet service providers may voluntarily elect to shut down the sites of customers involved in these kinds of situations. The Burst.net employee who handled the request erroneously believed that the FBI would want to seize the customers' server and thus cut off service to Blogetery. The FBI, however, did not seize the server. "

So, in conclusion, Burst.net the host for blogetery.com shut the server down, then said the government told them to. When the reality is they didn't have to and could have easily have simply informed the site owner to remove the content posted by a user, or removed themselves.

In conclusion, Burst.net is a shitty hosting company, as removal of the bad content was a trivial task, and they killed 10's of thousands of unrelated sites(correction, blogs) out of stupidity.
