There's a new virus infecting computers through yahoo messenger. The instant message looks like it comes from someone on your yahoo buddy list and contains a link about a pic on facebook. Alot of people have facebook and since it looks like it's coming from a buddy, it's easy to be fooled. Once you click on it, it freezes yahoo messenger, then sends out the same message to all friends on your friends list making it look like the message is coming from you. Deleting and reinstalling yahoo messenger doesn't work. One of my roommates was infected. I looked it up online and found out someone else was infected and posted on a board at bleepingcomputer. So far, nobody has answered their inquiry. I would appreciate any ideas on how to remove this. Thanks.

If you haven't already done so, run a full virus sweep of your computer.
If you don't have virus protection on your computer, there are many free
scans available out there. One that I have used successfully in the past is House Calls.

Is it the message that says "is this you?" and has a link to a supposed facebook page?
I've been seeing that one for a while.
A lot of the pso's I know were effected yesterday. Not me, cuz...I don't click on stuff like that.

I got these messages on mine, but because I'm not on f/book, I knew they were fake.

Identical messages from different friends was also a big clue.

It asks you to run a program to load the pics.

Obviously, DON'T RUN IT.

Don't click on links. Plain and simple. Facebook is full of that kind of crap. Hell, right when you sign up it sends out invitations to everyone in your address book to let them know you have joined and.. that you have pictures. BS. At that point you have not even added images to your page.

The last link crapola came out after FB opened their client files so that anyone could see your email address as well as all your friends. What a surprise that people started getting spammed by ads for Viagra coming out of facebook friends.
I hate that place.

But now that you have it, TRY to download a product called Malwarebytes. I say try because if you have the bad version of the evil spyware you may not be able to get to that page, or to download updates for it.

Variants of that have been going around YIM for over a year, IIRC. It drove a friend of mine batty until he got it weeded out.

I'm not sure if he was asked to run anything or if he was whether or not he did. He has a profile on this site and will be on here shortly. We didn't know the thread successfully posted until now. As I was posting, our internet service was interrupted due to severe weather.
