your thrad on the word true..is so true...so I guess I'm just a TRUE idiot...

MstrFury -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 3:51:52 PM)

and the spelling of the word thread was misspelled just so you can see without question...the TRUE idiot I am....

CrappyDom -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 3:55:29 PM)

Someone made an interesting point about by wanting to ban "true" I was guilty of the same thing I was railing against in those who want cut and dried definitions.  It made me think all morning and here is my response.

By definition, attaching the word true to one version implies that others are false.  If I am on the "true" path, anyone on another pass is on a false path.  By claiming true for myself, I impugn all others of being false.

Almost any other label I slap on my forehead doesn't do that.  If I stamp Doormat Dominant who lives to have his submissive use him for a toilet but only wants a 24/7 slave I have absolute control over, I haven't implied anything about anyone other than myself.  If I slap true on instead....

MHOO314 -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 4:03:10 PM)

I am real, I write, I post, I respond to evey email, no matter how idiotic--I mentor, I teach people, I meet people. I am true to My ideals, My beliefs, My feelings about TPE, the Life, My spirituality.

I am a real Domme by My standards and the standards of the sub that matches My Ying--I am true--to him, to My students, to My family--I do not use the terms "real" and "true" in My profile--am I no less real and true?

It seems to me that a "true" sub or slave, as the term is used, is one who will indulge whatever the speaker's fancy is, and all others are by definition "false" subs/slaves.

ICGsteve -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 4:06:51 PM)

M&B, thanks for the response. Is the most responsible response to address the online idiocy, or to disown it,  that is the question. The answer is not clear to me but I enjoy the debate and think it is worthwhile. Mostly I am looking after myself. We have never gone to clubs, and may never, but I don't want to get to a point where someone calls the police or child services if they notice that my wife is wearing a collar or they happen to hear something not intended for their ears. Lots of people doing stupid things with no sense of responsibility for themselves or others will bring a crackdown. When it happens I am not so sure that anyone will make the effort to distinguish between online and clubs, responsible individuals and irresponsible individuals. This is why I think efforts need to be made now to check the insanity.

Because I have "True" attatched to my name... in no way in hell makes me think others are fakes. When I first joined CM, I just needed a name to come up with. And I came up with what to me makes me who I am... I really do not give a rats ass who likes or dislikes "True" in my name for whatever reason. It's a fucking screen name... and the ones OFF LINE that know me... and those on line that know me.. know me to be true to myself... and that... is all ... that matters..... So do what ever you all want to the words "True" and "Real"... I'm still going to be me.... when it's all said and done... as will all the others... that know who and what they are... TRUE AND REAL TO THEMSELVES.

Sorry for the yelling... sort of... LOL

I disagree... Just because you Claim a True way for YOURSELF... doesn't equate that others way is false for themselves... IT only equates that their way would be False for YOU!

The second statement... Again... I disagree.... Doormat... can itself equate to a lesser or derogatory connotation to the the following noun, which happens to be Dominant.  The list of such labels that could possibly imply one self has having the true way for all is rather long, Also just the sentence structure stated in a certain right way can give alot of implications.

IE... I live a poly lifestyle because it is the only way to live and achieve ones needs and desires.

well... this sentence itself gives an implication of a true Universal way!  A way that I am sure many would be rather disagreeing to as well *G*

The issue with True, Real, other word usage really comes down to attempting to speak of oneself as compared to a universally for everyone.  Words used effectively can communicate great things... but they also can communicate extreme prejudice.  Outlawing a word is not going to change things.... changing mindsets is likely to be more effective in my opinion... and maybe learning to communicate more effectively as well.  but, I am sure there other things we can do as well.

slavejali -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 4:31:21 PM)

I will use whatever hell the words I want when expressing myself...........well unless Master tells me not to *grin*

I often use words like "true" or "really", they are words in the english language and I dont feel prejudiced against using them. If people want to get all bent out of shape over particular words..well that's their perrogative but kinda silly in my honest opinion.

Using "real" in a context that is used on here a bit as in " a true submissive"...I can deal with that, I don't feel any irk whatsoever in someone expressing themselves like that..all it would mean to me is that the person feels their submission deeply. If that person was using the term to somehow put other people down well thats their bag and has no hook for me to feel bad or whatever.

I see prejudice against certain words as a form of "book burning".

Knight, the word cannot be used to mean true only for yourself without adding the "only for yourself"  So my comment stands.

Of course one can structure a sentence to give implications, that is part of communication.

Again you have added modifiers I did not use.  Claiming that a poly lifestyle is the only way for ME to live is a statement of an individuals belief of how to live their own life, modify it as you have makes it an attempt to make it a universal statement.

I believe it is true that true is truly used by truly evil people to truly fuck over truly innoccent people, but truly, I could be truly wrong.

KnightofMists -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 5:16:13 PM)

I am true to myself... doesn't equate that someone else is False to themself.....

Your argue that....  I am true to myself and therefore others are false to themselves.

It is your arguement to prove that being true to yourself equates others as being false... you have yet to provide the logically connection.

CrappyDom -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 6:10:46 PM)

Please tell me you can understand the difference between:

I am true to myself ...

and

I am on a true path...

Arpig -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 6:34:06 PM)

Apparently they can't.

and to those who seem to think I advocated a ban..I said I wouldn't use the word that way myself....and would not be gentle with those who did.
Use whatever words make you happy to define yourself, but if you use them to put yourself on a pedestal or to belittle others, then I will poke fun at you, or flame you, or just overall make it plain that you are being ridiculous...you may notice that I have not mentioned truesub's nickname, why? because she uses it in a positive way, that she is true to her submissive nature, not to imply that she is better, or that those who do not live her way are in any way the less for it.
I have never called for a ban, however I would love to see the end of the word being in the ways I have specified, as I think it is hurtful and harmful....now all of you, go outside and see if you can figure out where you left your senses of humour, because, oh my gosh, but you are a prickly and persnickety bunch today

KnightofMists -> RE: True or false? (4/17/2006 6:57:42 PM)

yes the difference is significant... so are you choosing not to support your arguement then?

You want to ban a "word"  so if banning a word is justifiable... it would have to have not valid us with the BDSM context....

so I make statement using the word... is a valid way to use the word?... does it make less of others?  No... so why ban the word... because some individuals use it in a manner that displeases you... do you really thing if the word "true" was gone that another word would be used in an equally offensive manner to your tastes.

Frankly your whole arguement to banning the word "TRUE"  is truly silly

Uh huh. Yeah. Ok.  So you didn't gather the dirt and add water, but you did go play in the mud. It's cool. I like dirty, too. Just not censorship.  Glad to hear you are not really calling for censorship giving that you need freedom of speech a lot more than most folks. ::chuckles:: <-- humor ... and you thought I didn't have a sense of it. Celeste
