WASHINGTON – Senate Democrats broke through a stubborn Republican filibuster Tuesday and pressed to restart jobless benefits for 2 1/2 million Americans still unable to find work in the frail national economic recovery. The Democrats were victorious by the single vote of a new senator sworn in only moments earlier.

Senators voted 60-40 to move ahead on the bill, clearing the way for a final vote in the chamber on Wednesday.

Full story

Looks like a republican broke with the party to pull this out of the fire.

Whatever happened to

?

If we were really in a recovery would everyone need three years of these Obamaville welfare programs?

And the Republicans weren't against helping the victims of Obamas failed policies, they were demanding that this new welfare program be paid for by cutting spending elsewhere rather than further exploding the deficit.

It's like you took what I was thinking and put it into moving pictures. Now all it needs is a little music.

You mean Obama didn't enter office with an economic decline well under way courtesy of the Decider?

And why is it that Republicans who supported massive bailouts for for the financial and auto firms decided helping laid-off workers was a welfare program?

Even though it was paltry compared to the money given to those companies.

Where was the demand for cutting spending elsewhere when they voted for TARP?

What about the ones who didn't support the massive bailout, but still acknowledge that the extensions amount to a welfare program? And why is admitting it is a welfare program such a terrible thing. Don't you feel welfare programs are necessary?

joether -> RE: Filibuster broken, jobless benefits may flow soon (7/20/2010 8:36:11 PM)

Yes, Republicans are against this, as its money going to the bottom 96% of Americans. If it were to be going to the other 4% (like a tax cut for the top 1% wealth), the Republicans would be all over it. There are alot of Americans out of a job. By giving this money to the unemployed, it helps them put food on the table, pay some bills, and hopefully, land a good paying job. It should not have been stopped, nor held hostage, the way Republican did. That is purely shameful! But dont worry, the unemployed remember stuff like this, and WHOM, to vote for in November.

So? You do know that unemployment is usually some percentage of what you made at your last job?

You're really really bad at math.

Allow me to make an addition to this statement.

There are alot of Americans out of a job through no fault of their own.

There are alot of americans out of a job because corporate america got greedy.

There are alot of americans out of a job because no one was watching the hen house.

There are alot of americans out of a job because government didnt give a damn about america, only about their own pockets.

I did the math actually, and 99 weeks at $943 a week comes to $93357.00 dollars.

And since unemployment is based on previous income, what would you have them do, change the way unemployment is calculated?

The simple fact is the Consumer Price Index for Massachusetts is 181.8, the national average is 173.8 and the average annual income for the state is $36,767.00

So there is a very small minority getting the top benefit amount.

You can check my figures here

tazzygirl -> RE: Filibuster broken, jobless benefits may flow soon (7/20/2010 9:15:16 PM)

Eligibility and amount
Americans out of work who do not qualify for unemployment insurance include part-time, temporary, and self-employed workers.[24]

Generally, the worker must be unemployed through no fault of his/her own (generally through lay-offs). Unemployment benefits are based on reported covered quarterly earnings. The amount of earnings and the number of quarters worked are used to determine the length and value of the unemployment benefit. The average weekly payment is 36 percent of the individual's average weekly wage

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment_benefits#United_States

36% sure isnt a whole lot

YAY!!! We spent all these weeks so the Democrats could win the argument over whether we got the money to extend jobless benefits from the great big pile of borrowed money we haven't spent yet, or if we took out a whole new loan.

I do hope those most affected by this have good records of continuing their job search during the lapse, so they can apply for back pay.
