Illinois Town Wants To Outlaw Eye-Rolling
Next time you're in line at the grocery store and you roll your eyes at the person with two carts full of items refusing to leave the 10-items-or-fewer line, you might be in trouble with the law -- at least if you live in Elmhurst, Illinois. Officials of the Chicago suburb are looking into finding a way of putting an end to the practice by legal means. The idiocy stems from a recent city council meeting where an Elmhurst resident was ejected from the room after rolling her eyes in reaction to something that was said by a council member. Members of the Elmhurst city council have asked the City Attorney to look into the creation of a "disturbance and disorderly conduct" violation and to see if eye-rolling could somehow be shoehorned into its definition. Illinois state law defines disorderly conduct is "an act in such unreasonable manner as to alarm or disturb another, or to provoke a breach of the peace." While she apparently is against a prohibition on eye-rolling, the Elmhurst citizen who was booted from the meeting says she's all for having a definition of disorderly conduct in the city's books. "I'd like for them (city officials) to have a better understanding of the open meetings act and its meaning and to understand what disorderly conduct is," she explained. As for the City Attorney, who is slated to report back to the council on his findings on Jan. 26, he seems doubtful that rude behavior at a city council meeting should be an issue for law enforcement. "It's not in any way a punishable offense by a fine," he said. "It's a matter of decorum." What do you think: At what point does eye-rolling and such behavior cross the line and become something that could be considered disorderly conduct? Damn, that's some ornery town.

We kids used to get the stinkeye (at best) from our parents for eye-rolling.  However, I've had times when my poor eyes found just how grungy the floor of Kroger's is!

LaTigresse -> RE: Illinois Town Wants To Outlaw Eye-Rolling (7/22/2010 11:23:16 AM)

Oh good grief.......my kids would have spent most of their childhood, teens, and early 20's, in prison!!!!

At absolutely no point. The lines do not merge...they are not even in the same time zone.

thornhappy -> RE: Illinois Town Wants To Outlaw Eye-Rolling (7/22/2010 11:26:15 AM)

Maybe in stocks on the public square?

I can see a judge or bailiff bawling out someone's eye rolling (especially if they were in the jury!) but dayum, at a council meeting or other public spaces?

I thought council meetings were held just to practice eye rolling.  Right up there with PTA and band booster meetings [8|].

HOLY EFFING CRAP. I swear to god I spend a week in that town a couple months ago with my friend's grandmother, on our road trip. Being a native New Yorker, all I can say is, people in the midwest are FRIGGIN NICE, and it's very, very, VERY weird.

Haha it's a bit snobby, but the people we met seemed to be pretty nice. I suppose it reminded me of many towns on Long Island...upscale commuter town and all. Although, the house architecture are alot more interesting than in the Northeast.

PA, they really want to be Oak Brook or maybe Highland Park.

They don't feel respected even though they have, Elmhurst College. It's a lovely little
expensive private school.

It is mostly about image. Elmhurst is next to Bensenville which is next to the airport.

It can get really weird up there about where you live.

But does it cause racial profiling????????

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Illinois Town Wants To Outlaw Eye-Rolling (7/22/2010 3:23:44 PM)

Under sharia law eye-rolling is probably punishable by their removal.
