Hi everyone!
I thought it would be interesting to discuss the writing / creative process.  The wind up, the actual creating, the updates, the submission to publications, things placed in exhibits, etc.

Any thoughts?

best,
sunshine

Well... ok... Maybe not!

For me, I am very disciplined about writing when the urge strikes.  I get up in the middle of the night or stay on the computer and cancelling appointments.  When the muse visits, she needs to be honored (in my opinion).  I'm not really one who "writes every day" although I do generally.  I also try to meditate so that I can get to the core of my truth (whatever that looks like).

On days when I don't feel like writing, I will do research, work on my excel spreadsheet of places to submit stories and such.  Sometimes I just post here or go to facebook.

I also try to every day find s simple truth to write about in a short and simple way.

Any other folks want to contribute?

best,
sunshine

My muse tends to be all over the place. I'm not sure how other people are, but I get story ideas and will work on fleshing them out, working with characters, setting, plot, etc. But then I may another idea pop into my head. So it's not unusual for me to work on several books at a time.

I don't necessarily have a particular ritual when I write, but I do have certain things that are my own particular oddities. LOL I have a particular brand of pen that I use when I'm writing; I have a set of worksheets that I've put together to help me with characterization, plotting, etc. I used to only write by the seat of my pants, but these days I find I do much better if I can get things planned out in a general direction. It helps me to stay more focused.

I know many authors I've talked to that prefer to listen to music or some other type of background noise when they write, but I'm the opposite. I like the quiet, with few distractions at least until I get to heavy sex scenes, then I have certain songs I like to listen to while I get down to the nitty gritty in the story. [:D]

Anybody else have any type of rituals when they write? What about music?

Wheldrake -> RE: The Process (8/20/2010 2:16:37 PM)

Let’s see… the ideas usually come when I’m out walking, or during those dreamy moments when I’m just waking up or falling asleep. Some of them start out as personal fantasies, and gradually develop into more coherent storylines. Often I’ll play with an idea in my head for months, sometimes years, before I actually sit down to write it up. There are usually quite a few ideas tumbling around at once, all stuck in gestation.

The writing happens when I have time, which is all too seldom. Usually late at night, always without background music or other distractions, often under the mild influence of alcohol. I hardly ever bother with preliminary notes of any kind before I plunge into the story. As I work, however, I often go back to read over what I’ve written and edit with the utmost ruthlessness. I always use a word processor, partly because of my predilection for constant editing and partly because I simply prefer to type. Most of the things I write are quite long, so I take some time at the very end to make a final editorial pass and insert chapter divisions. I always like to name my chapters, but coming up with chapter names and a title for the whole story tends to be one of the hardest parts of the whole process.

Having described how I go about writing, I suppose I’d better try to post something on these boards. Stay tuned.
