Aneirin -> Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 6:37:22 AM)

Not responding as in Firefox not responding, a message I seem to be seeing more and more of these days, is anyone else getting these messages, or is it just myself ?

It particularly happens when my pc is doing a virus scan with AVG free, but the machine is an intel dual core, this should not be happening should it ? Oh, and the machine is running vista basic for now.

Incidently, when running SpaceMonger what Vista takes up is alarming, with mine, almost a third of the f the 66g hard drive, with my stuff on it, additional programs and my work, I have just over a half drive left, yet the machine is so slow and the issue with firefox when in the virus scan is really annoying.

So, any guesses would be much appreciated, as I am not sure whether to ditch firefox or ditch vista, although the latter will be going soon in favour of XP Pro, I already have all the additional drivers downloaded and stored externally.

Hey A![:)]
You mean in general or just when you try and get on the forums here?

the.dark.

Aneirin -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 7:39:33 AM)

In general, but I had big problems trying to get on here earlier this week, kept getting reports that the site had exceeded its bandwidth or something, but I thought that was shite because if one kept trying one could get on, but not onto the forums, same message. Leave it a bit, try again, and I got on, but the whole process was repeated with trying to read threads.

I cleared the firefox cache and all the other stuff that was stored and then no problem after that, so my belief, firefox is becoming a pain. But firefox stops responding on a daily basis now, so I am looking around for something better, as firefox I believe has become top heavy. Four years ago, on an old win 98 machine firefox was fab, bur now it's becoming lousy.

She took the words out of my mouth :-)

Although I tend to use firefox for CM because there are bits of Bulletin Board or whatever it is this place runs on that chrome seems not to like.

That problem was NOT with firefox. The problem was with CM.
Most people had a similar issue, it was reported on other threads and I experienced the same thing on a different browser.

edit: clarity

Personally I think it is the vista. Most know I am no tech but I got those message with firefox and vista. If it only happens when you run the anti virus you may have to do that when you don't need to do other things. I wouldn't include what happened here at CM with what is going on with your computer because many had issues like that. So to me it seems to be between vista, the anti virus and firefox. I actually had all of those on my vista and had the same problems. Firefox on other computers... no problem. Avg on other computers... no problem. The combo of the two on vista... big problems.

Try cnet.com. I hear there is a newer free anti virus that is getting great reviews. I wasn't all that impressed with AVG because I have friends that got viruses so bad the comps had to go into the shop, but my son in law swears it is great.

Good luck!

PeonForHer -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 10:45:21 AM)

Yep, it's the site.  I've been getting the same probs on and off all week, with both Chrome and IE, but with no other site.  I think it's down to CM's tech people being norty.

I thought perhaps there was some disgruntled user doing denial of service attacks.... but really, who knows

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 10:54:14 AM)

A) why are you running a virus scan when trying to use the computer? They are normally schedualed to run when your not using your pc for a reason, they are highly cpu  and ram intensive.

b) Why are you running avg when if you have a legit copy of windows security essentials is free and more compatible, Most issues ive found with virus scanners is microsoft doesnt like them.

c) what besides firefox is running, How much ram do you have? Your cpu can be amazing but if your running vista with not enough ram well your screwed. Vista the ram hog it might be takes 1 gig to run its self just fine.

d) Its not firefox  any other browser will f up if its a ram issue it doesnt matter what it is if theres only 1 gig for vista in ram your going to have problems

e) Most macs (hardware) Is booted with Microsoft software because people hate mac.

f) Any other things that are buggy check the last update installed. one of the more recents was a mess up and effected alot of users.

g) I have  my MCTS in Vista....

Lockit -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 11:09:18 AM)

With Firefox, Vista and AVG, I had problems at any site or even just opening the browser and it was before the current issues at CM. Firefox wouldn't respond a lot of the time. I now have Firefox on another os and I won't say the anti virus and have had no problems. Getting along with CM lately is a CM problem.

Lucylastic -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 11:17:01 AM)

SO glad Im not the only one having an issue with the site, it was about to drive me crazy, talk about hooked!!
Ive had problems with firefox and went back to a much earlier copy. I now turned off auto updating.
I would ditch Vista ASAP, go back to XP.... what RAM are you up to... anything over 4 is a waste but 4 is gotta have these days
Also yeah, any scans will slow down your puter to a standstill..do them when you are sleeping or eating or something else

Im using 7 at the moment and loving it as I got a new 64 bit puter so its been so much fun tweaking it, the only issues Ive had with it, is my scanner doesnt run on it, but its ancient, my printer, cam, etc etc all work perfect.
Good luck
Of course your mileage may vary
[:)].

DesFIP -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 6:55:53 PM)

In addition to AVG, you also need to run antimalware programs and registry cleaners. The problem with the free AVG is that you can wind up going a long time between updates and scans. The paid version updates daily and schedules scans daily. And that helps.

SpiritedRadiance -> RE: Not Responding ? (7/23/2010 6:59:03 PM)

Vista to run just its self takes up a gig of ram and 20gigs of hard drive space. Its a great operating system for its abilities, but it did come with its flaws. If you have vista and want to go to a different OS i would recommend going up to seven instead of Down to xp, mostly because of the security flaws in XP.

I Have 4 gigs of ram with my 64 bit vista, and have never had firefox not respond to me, when doing anything, wither it be heavy gaming, along with watching hulu, using about 20 websites and several other things all at once.

The only time vista is an issue when is when it doesnt have enough ram, If  you do only have 2 gigs of ram, or 1, some suggestions are to turn off areo, and attach a memory stick of at least one gig empty to the computer.

Vista came with an neat little feature known as superfetch and Ready boost. where when you dont have enough ram, and you attach a memory stick it makes the computer think that memory stick is more ram, so instead of paging to the hard drive (the thing that makes it go so slow and take up so much space.) It pages between the ram and the memory stick. Its not perfect but it will boost a LITTLE bit of performance.
