HANOI, Vietnam – North Korea threatened Saturday to mount a powerful nuclear response to upcoming joint U.S.-South Korean military drills, calling the exercises an "unpardonable" provocation on top of wrongly blaming Pyongyang for the sinking of a South Korean warship.

North Korea's powerful National Defense Commission, led by leader Kim Jong Il, warned that its troops would counter the move to hold military maneuvers involving a nuclear-armed U.S. supercarrier with a "retaliatory sacred war."

NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills

Lets see, a war in Iraq, a war in Afghanistan and now North Korea is threatening to use nukes if the US and South Korea hold a joint training exercise.

President Obama better put on his game face, he may just be in for a rather nasty week.

China would never allow it....this is just posturing from a bankrupt regime.

He must be getting hungry again.

We could bomb North Korea back to the stone age, except they are already there. Iran is a big problem. North Korea, not so much..

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills (7/23/2010 9:25:46 PM)

He's not going to try anything anyway, now that Sunshinemiss is over there. She'll take care of everything.

DCWoody -> RE: NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills (7/23/2010 9:59:01 PM)

Let's all hope that ol' Kim doesn't think President Obama is a pussy, and that President Obama is a bit slower on the trigger than he was with Shirley.

President Obama did not fire Shirley, or tell the ag secretary to fire her, the ag secretary did that all on his own.

*snort*

I do hope that they don't do anything.  I'm planning a trip to No. Korea for my next vacation!  I'd hate to be a POW.  That would seriously suck rocks.

LadyEllen -> RE: NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills (7/24/2010 1:52:28 AM)

I think a two week vacation in N Korea every year should be obligatory. It wouldnt matter who you are or your circumstances, you'd come home thanking the heavens you didnt have to live there and with a whole new perspective on your problems.

But like all tourism, such a scheme would inevitably come to destroy that which it celebrated (repression, privation and humourlessness) as the five dollar fees per week (all inclusive, but there aint much included) added up, and the politburo became decadent and their wealth trickled down, just like it doesnt here......

More seriously I believe and trust this is more sabre rattling from a lunatic who shall shortly expire, at which point the opportunity will open for change in N Korea along the lines of the Chinese model. Just beyond my lifetime, if such a thing should occur, Korea shall be reunited.

Let's face reality.

No matter what Obama does or does not do it will be spun by the conservative outrage machine into an epic failure.

Shirley is a prime example.

The outrage was first over her remarks, then when the White House reacted to those remarks the same people who were condemning her suddenly started defending her.

I can respect disagreements of policy, I can't respect the whiny nonsense that is going on now where the focus is just to oppose even if that opposition requires a 100% reversal in position.

Sure thing, JLF. That's the official version, isn't it? Ready to invest today in some prime Arizona beachfront?

mnottertail -> RE: NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills (7/24/2010 7:57:31 AM)

Then you do agree that Bush made the CIA write up untruths about WMD, Rich. Or, you buying real estate in Beachouse, AZ as well?

More whining.

TheHeretic -> RE: NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills (7/24/2010 8:04:56 AM)

Sure, Ron. And he made most of the other intel agencies worldwide say the same thing. You and I both know why Bush II wanted to invade Iraq, and that his administration was going to use whatever was handy to sell it.

(I have much to say in the reunification, but it's bedtime)... anyway,
Ellen - have you seen the VBS special on No. Korea.  It's fascinating.

best,
sunshine

No other intel agencies worldwide said the same thing, they went off the CIA document. As did Britian.

So, different standards huh? We believe your assessment must be the case, but deny other assessments that have a negative impact on your cause.

Ain't gonna happen, Rich.

Moonhead -> RE: NKorea threatens 'nuclear deterrence' over drills (7/24/2010 8:23:22 AM)

Actually, MI5 were told by Blair to falsify evidence that would support the invasion. I'm not sure, but I think that's where the CIA documents came from in the first place.

So then you acknowledge it was fraudulent?

Or is this another attempt to say Saddam had those mysterious WMD's that mysteriously disappeared?

Where have you been, RML? Are you only now catching on to the things I've been saying about the Iraq invasion for a very long time? We can ask the Iranians if Iraq had ever had chemical weapons, but that was never the heart of it.

Too bad you admit that your questions are not asked in good faith, huh?
