Did anyone read about article about Sex/Porn classes at the university level? They mention de Sade and other D/s S&M authors as pornographic. At least, that was my take on the article.

My perception of "pornography" is that the word is used in a negative fashion... have you read the article??

Marquis de Sade is pornographic at the first shot, yup.
But does a pornographic work usually possess politics, psychology or an opinion about society in it?
Pure porn is just about sex. Sade's work is not.

I dont want to make an analysis of his work here, (a thesis would be recommanded for this) but I think that Sade's writing isnt *all* pornographic because of the thoughts that are behing his work.

I didnt read the article, but the ideology that Sade's work is only porn is enough to make me see what kind of article that is.

But would you mind giving up the link for that all of us shall see?

Sounds like an interesting article, they should have looked at my class fall 2005!

I couldn't judge the class though until I saw the syllabus and knew some things about how professor teaching it:

1) defines pornography -- there are many definitions out there.
2) wants to promote the class -- a lot of titles for classes focus on drawing in students
3) discusses the work -- positively, negatively or in a neutral fashion
4) picked the literature read -- all from a time period, all het, variety, etc?

I actually read the article and was quite pleased.

In my view what is pornographc is determined by society at the time and changes over time. Some consider any nudity to be pornographic and would cover sculptures of nudes. Was DeSade pornographic? Depends on your point of view and the societal norms you grew up with.

Making pornography a "studied" subject continues to help take it out of the closet and looks at it from a personal, social, and societal standpoint. This should help to further erode the typical American puritanical double standard. Hope the right wing does not step in and kill funding for those schools.

To me true pornography is the senseless warefare and poverty we allow to happen.
