Might be you.  I use Vista at work on a rather underpowered machine (with only 2Gb RAM) and regularly curse it.  I run 7 on a high power laptop with 6Gb RAM and it's incredibly stable; even better than my old XP machine.

I was a real skeptic after my Vista travails.  The only issues I've had are the typical Windows "start up" fights between competing programs (antivirus, updaters, firewall, etc.).  I generally regard Microsoft with a jaundiced eye, so giving even grudging respect to one of their products is high praise indeed.

Seeing as how Win 7 Is essentially an apology for Vista, it BETTER be an improvement.

7 is cake.  Easy stuff and runs on less resources than Vista.  Of course if you know what to eliminate, Vista is pretty tolerable as well.  I have both on one machine and have had no issues.  I don't care for the new IE 8 though, I hate it when programs want to think they are brainy.

I also like Windows 7 but like a lot of new users I went to Win7 when I upgraded my computer. Maybe it seems faster and more stable because I use 64 bit and I have 24 g of system memory…but I also load an use 32 bit programs and they run great.

ps... 24 g of memory, a fast processor along with 64 bit programs make a big difference when editing video and large 14 bit raw files.

I never had the opportunity to use Vista. I went from XP right to Windows 7. Yes, there were some initial quirks I had to deal with but I find the functionality to be much better than XP.

Knock on wood...no major issues thus far.

Ive had it over a month now and Im loving it, I didnt think I would move from XP for a long time, really didnt like Vista at all,  but  once I tweaked the settings to where I WANT them, Im very happy camper with 7. All the prettiness is pretty much bloatware, but I really like aero peek , Ive striped a lot of  other stuff.
I despise windows IE 8 too, ak ptooey  and got rid of it
also being 64 bit I get to use as much ram as my  MB allows, so add RAM it helps oodles
lots of info to help tweak out there too.
enjoy

Not knowing what your issues are, it could be either.  I'm a TechNet subscriber so I've used both since before the first RC distributions and I much prefer Win7.

A few things.

One is that copying anything seems increasingly difficult.

Another is that even though I have not selected automatic updates my computer will shut down at random for Windows updates with absolutely no warning.

Which, needless to say, loses anything I happen to be working on at the moment.

I got WIN7 when I got this computer.  Yes, I had to be trained for it, but I know its tonnes better than anything Vista and ME.

Now...where is the Dummies book...I need to move pdf files to another place...

Copying what?  Files?  Text?  How is is difficult?  Also, what are your system specs, particularly RAM, CPU and version of Win7?

When you click Start/Control Panel/System and Security/Windows Update/Change Settings, what's the current setting?

When I try to do something as simple as copy and paste I have problems which I never had before, even with Vista.

I have no idea about the rest which is why I posted the question, to get some help.

Another problem I have with it is I cannot keep sites open.

If I transfer from one open site I often lose the site I transferred from.

What settings are you referring to?

Sounds like a browser setup problem.  Do you want it in "open in new window" or "open in new tab" mode?  Otherwise the new site will often open in the current window.

The latest Firefox had a weird default that had new tabs opening next to the current one instead of "last on the right" like it used to be.  That can make for some massive confusion.

I use Firefox but have never had this happen using it with either XP or Vista.

For an example if I am here and I'm making a post but go to look up something I lose the post nearly every time.
