The above article paints a disturbing picture; one part of the equation that gets continually ignored in the US is the GUNS and BUTTER debate. When will the political discussion ever turn toward getting the US Military Budget under control? Arguably the budget could be halved, which would save $300B a year that could then be used in some capacity to pump up the civilian economy.

Instead, we now have policies closely akin to a Banana Republic.

The US government should stop spending money on wars in foreign countries and use that money to secure our borders, fund single payer health care (not forced health insurance), and bring decent paying jobs back to the US. They should end corporate lobbyists buying votes so our senate and congress will once again represent the people, not the corporations.

Only in the United States is the health of the people secondary to making money. If this is what "capitalism" is about, I'll take socialism any day of the week.

Yup save that $300 B a year and thank Allah for it 5 times a day.

911 happened years ago. It sucks that it happened, but nothing we do can change it. Yes there are terrorists. There have always been terrorists both in this country (Oklahoma City bomber) and overseas. For the US government to use terrorism as an excuse to fund overseas wars during an economic recession is ridiculous. As an American, I feel alot more terrorized by lobbyists buying votes, immigration, outsourcing, and health insurance companies.

This thread is basically trending with the national debate. At least NewsWeek had the military budges of the leading Countries in the World -- to say that the US spending is disproportionate to everyone else is an understatement. One might even make the case that such a level or war spending is destabilizing for world peace and economic prosperity.

Spending more than they could afford on the military was a contributing factor to the Soviet Republic's demise. We should pay attention.

The Wall Street Journal had and article about wealth distribution looking like a barbell a year or two ago (big group on the top, skinny middle class, big group on the bottom).
