My best friend and his lady are tying the knot in portland at voodoo doughnuts(so jealous). we all are going a few days before the ceremony and none of us have actually been there, so we are going to check out the city and surrounding areas. Does anybody have some spots or suggestions that we could check out while we are there?

That is my city, MissA. Powell's bookstore is a must. You have never been in anyplace quite like it (there is also a cool fetish shop right across the street). Washington Park has the zoo and Japanese Gardens for a price, as well as the rose gardens which cost you the time to find a damn parking place. Saturday Market is very hippified and fun. Waterfront park has a lot of different festivals and events through the summer.

The Baghdad Theatre is a restored 30's moviehouse where you can sit down to a movie with a glass of beer. Jakes Crayfish is an excellent place for seafood, and men were shanghaid from there 100 years ago. A very disreputable looking shack and trailer called Roakes has the best coney island dog you'll ever bite into.

If you have a car available, drive up the Columbia River Gorge to Multnomah Falls. You can just take the I84 east from downtown, visit the big waterfall from the freeway turnout and be back in 2 hours round trip, or grab the scenic highway and make a full afternoon of natural beauty.

We'll be up there next weekend ourselves, and I am very ready. Email me on the other side if you have specific questions.

Those are great choices.  If you have any children along, OMSI (OR museum of science and industry) is great for an afternoon.

I presume by "Portland", you mean Oregon.  If you meant Portland, Maine, I can give you some tips.

Portland,Maine? I'm sorry that I never heard of it...or any other city in Maine for that manner. The UK didn't really teach me too much in terms of US geography. But yes, I mean Portland,Oregon. But i will really make a list of the mentioned places- they sound awesome.

MissA, Powell's Books that Rich mentioned, is almost at the top of my To See list, so even though I haven't been there, I can tell you that it's pretty incredible, if you like books.

You know, next time you go all the way to Oregon, you might as well stop off in Colorado for a couple of days.  Lots to see/do here.

An additional pointer. While Seattle got more of the reputation, Portland is a city that takes coffee seriously. Any of the little espresso shacks you see scattered around town are going to be far superior to any Starbucks.

Beer is another thing. There are a number of brew-pubs with a hundred or more varieties on tap. McMenimans is a good string (the same folks who have the Bagdad, but without the movie).

Portland is also a world-class destination for strip bars.

DS: I wish i could stop in denver, but my layover is in chicago. but if i get the chance, i'd love to visit denver. Anyee: i heard Maine was great for seafood so i'd love to visit there. TH: why didn't you start with coffee?!? coffee is my livelyhood!
