Aneirin -> Cats and scent (7/24/2010 6:14:11 PM)

Ok I got a cat, an ex feral cat that someone brought in to the vets for whatever, which the vet said the great pick up and put down as is common with unowned cats, seeing as the cat pounds are overflowing. I got my cat, my ex feral cat from the receptionist who knew I wanted a  cat, far better than that unkind needle in the neck for the reason the creature does not have a human owner, humanitarian they call it killing an otherwise healthy cat. So I have the cat, and after a few months she is starting to respond to humans, her fur is dematted and she has a good diet when she wants it, even love if that is required for I see the cat that lives with me as another lost soul unsure of what is confonting her.

Ok, my place has always been a watering hole for cats, whatever cat of whatever human owner, they come here after they have been turfed out for the night, they feed and rest as previously catless I always had attractive to cats food in.

Now, since I have a resident cat, I have noticed a difference in just what cat jumps through my window for something better than the nightly stalk, and of those brave cats, what they do too , I understand as authorise their access to the food bowl they have to smell human and to get that, they submit the how to get something out of a human mode, which they do quite well as cats are adorable.

I understood something this evening, a regular visitor through the window on seeeing my ex feral cat staking out the food bowl came directly to me and there did a serious sucking up session, seeking a human's touch. Now out of interest and wary of my cat's eye I did not respond to the wiles of this visiting cat, the cat sought human touch and believe me that was very hard but I had to know. The cat left, ventured to the food bowl and was hissed off by the cat that lives with me, the cat then exited out the window from whence it came.

I understand now a human touch and there smell is advantageous to cats, even amongst their own kind, they need us in our domesticated world to live as easy as they can live, as it is nature to seek a better lifestyle, we even  do it ouselves.

But what interests me is the power of scent, the cat it seemed needed my scent to get what it wanted, l denied that, it went away, so if cats being animals, which is basically what we are, how does scent affect us today ?

Does anyone have any idea that human scent is advantageous to them, perhaps another's scent, or even a scent created to achieve a result, has anyone had experience of these?

We live in an overtly perfumed world, what of the scent of nature, is it comforting or repulsive ?

_-  you are the cats pup.

I suspect a jealousy in that you cat is unwilling to share you with any other cat.

scent is HUGE in the human world. It triggers memories, thoughts, feelings and a whole host of other things. For me, when I head off to bed and my Mate is still up... I tend to latch on to his pillows, which have his 'scent'.. helps me sleep until he is there again.

With cats though.. coming from one with many.. the visiting cat may have been seeking your 'approval' for the 'right' to get food and warmth and all. I know my oldest cat tends to do that. Gets loves from mommy before he will eat.

When you say the cat did some serious sucking up, do you mean that he was attempting to rub up against or on you ?
If so, you have it in reverse. Cats rub up against us humans and other things to " mark " us.
I suspect the outdoor kitties have seen and smelled your new kitty and feel imposed upon and want to mark you, to let the new one know what's what, so to speak

If it wasn't rubbing up against you, or trying to, what was the behavior ? I may be able to shed more lighton it, if I knew the behavior the cat was exibiting.

Isnt it a great joy to be loved by a cat?

Or voluntarily enslaved by a cat because we seek their affections. Once they know how they can twist you around their paw, they use it to control you.

Who is the master, cat or human ?

Yeah, in sucking up I man attempting to make contact by being cute, this usually involves the treading of the paws in one spot and attempting to shove it's head into my line of sight. On the pc last night, cat wanted to sit on the keyboard so he was between me and the screen. Eventually after being denied access to the keyboard, the cat rubbed against the edge of the screen and did its stupid look, moon cat I call it, because it is a real looney and white as the moon.

Some mornings, I get soggy  mooncat trying to cuddle up when am sleeping, my cat on the other hand sleeps the other side of the room but I notice watches with sly eyes.

Me aware of my cat, I feel loyal to my cat in a way I do not want to hurt her feelings by being loving with a neighbour's cat, when it is she cannot make the effort herself to do the same.

All the cats in the area used to come here, about nine of them locally, they knew how to get what they wanted, and were prepared to do what was needed, but my cat, nah, that cat it seems will not submit to being cuddly to humans, I wonder if the cat's heritage of a long time feral might be something to do with this, or is it I just have a grumpy cat.

Old saying: Dogs have masters; cats have staff.

Just pet the kitty already. It wants you to love it so DO IT!

This should not take a moment's thought, let alone a dissertation.

Aneirin, it may be what MBMBN said, it was trying to "mark" you.
As for "scent" a cat's olfactory glands (nose) is only about three times more powerfull than that of us humans in comparison to 20 to 400 times as powerfull in dogs depending on the breed.
Where cats really excell is in hearing! A scientist friend of mine at Tufts U. told me that in experiments they found that cats could "hear" the electricity coursing through the powerlines in the walls when a light switch was turned on!
I thought he was just kidding us but he was serious! That's pretty amazing!
I'm a cat-lover too. They kind of "adopt" (you!)

The scary thing is, my neighbours have already said me and my cat are very alike, we are suited to each other, which if so explains why the cat does it's best to sleep as far away from me as possible and snarl and growl when the grooming brush comes out.

But because when I got her, her coat was so matted the only way I could find to dematt with less danger was to do it when the cat had it's face in a bowl of tuna. When she eats tuna she purrs loudly, but when I start clipping out the matted knots she growls, which is quite funny, a cat purring and growling at the same time. I call her growling and spitting as her swearing at me, so she gets sworn back at until she quits, obviously my tone of voice gets the better of her.

But dematted, she is a much happier cat and the hairballs seem to be less these days, but it is funny when she goes through the hoking up ritual.

My cat will perk up- and sure enough- there is a mouse of something.   I like how nothing bothers her.  Bombs could go off and she would be calm and sleepy.  Or simply look at it.
