And getting dumber by the week:

Crackdown on ultra-luxurious showerheads

Gene Goforth sells showerheads—big ones, like the Raindance Imperial 600 AIR. Selling for as much as $5,457, it has a 24-inch spray face, 358 no-clog channels and a triple-massage option. "You can just stand under it, and it helps your psyche," says Mr. Goforth, who has one in his home.

Now, Mr. Goforth is in a lather over the federal government's tough new line on water-hogging showerheads, part of a new effort to enforce energy- and water-use regulations. "Leave my shower alone," Mr. Goforth recently wrote in a letter to the Department of Energy.
Regulators are going after some of the luxury shower fixtures that took off in the housing boom. Many have multiple nozzles, cost thousands of dollars and emit as many as 12 gallons of water a minute.

In May, the DOE stunned the plumbing-products industry when it said it would adopt a strict definition of the term "showerhead" in enforcing standards that have been on the books—but largely unenforced—for nearly 20 years.

Industry response has been fast and furious. "It was not the legislative intent of Congress to authorize DOE to regulate the bathing habits of Americans," wrote Frederick Desborough, vice president of California Faucets, a Huntington Beach, Calif., manufacturer, in a letter to the DOE in June.

The showdown is a challenge to President Barack Obama and his energy secretary, Steven Chu, as they try to cajole—or compel—Americans to use water and energy more efficiently.

If I had a luxury showerhead like that and some fucking government department tried to take it away I'd be outraged too.

Seriously even if this administration didn't get compared to the USSR on a daily basis this would be over the top.

"A 1992 federal law says a showerhead can deliver no more than 2.5 gallons per minute at a flowing water pressure of 80 pounds per square inch. For years, the term "showerhead" in federal regulations was understood by many manufacturers to mean a device that directs water onto a bather. Each nozzle in a shower was considered separate and in compliance if it delivered no more than the 2.5-gallon maximum. But in May, the DOE said a "showerhead" may incorporate "one or more sprays, nozzles or openings." Under the new interpretation, all nozzles would count as a single showerhead and be deemed noncompliant if, taken together, they exceed the 2.5 gallons-a-minute maximum."

What makes you think anyone in the article is a conservative?

And why dont they require showers instead of baths, since baths use so much more water than the average shower?

Yes, that is the key element of this issue, 'luxury'. If you want your luxury, your going to PAY FOR IT. That assumes your RICH and can afford such things. If you cant, then your merely materialistic, and more likely in deep amounts of debt. During the last decade, for example, it was some how programmed in to people's minds, they needed a big house, 2 big-ass SUVs and a pile load, of high tech home equipment (latest drier, DVD, cellphone, etc). The end result is not surprising, people couldnt afford their habit, and now blame the goverment for their own stupidity.

Conserving our resources for actual need rather than extra, unnecessary gluttony is over the top? How do you figure?

At a time when many communities are concerned with their falling water tables issues over showers that might use something  like 200 gallons of water in a 10 to 15 minute shower should be expected.

It certainly might be a problem in California and the Southwest, I'd have thought.

To be honest I am not sure what this has to do conservatives specifically.

I don't see conserving our resources as the central issue here...

If effective resource management requires conservation, then reducing consumption is reasonable and necessary. But this can be accomplished either by assessing increasingly severe penalties for excessive usage or by limiting usage absolutely. Then it's up to me (or you) whether to take a luxurious shower or, say, wash the car. A problem only arises when the government seeks to intrude itself into the private lives of its citizens by making those decisions for them. Too, it bears considering that staying in the shower for half an hour with a regular showerhead is just as wasteful as a scrub under a luxury model. So what's next, showerheads with government-mandated timers? I mean c'mon. Is there no line where government control over our private lives ends?

I don't disagree with conserving our resources, just with this way of doing it.

K.

I was wondering about that myself. Perhaps rule feels that as Goforth is whining about something the feds have done, he must be a conservative?

I wonder if Al Gore and John "French" Kerry have these showerheads installed on their yachts?
I don't think Australia where Kerry's yacht was built has the same govt. restrictions.
And guess who has the "biggest" yacht? Al Gore of course at 100 feet. Kerry's is only 72 feet. I doubt the showerheads in those yachts come from Lowe's or Ace Hardware!
Did the congress actually vote on that law that says you can only use 2.5 gal of water per minute in a shower?
I doubt Al or John are taking "sea-showers"! All the Real Sailors in here know what those are!
"Oh Luv-eee, could you pass me that hair conditioner from France I want to get all the salt out of my hair from para-sailing with those "tradesmen."

Fuck all to say about the issue under discussion, then. There's a surprise.

Hey kinkroids...get a fucking grip. Time to really put two & two together.

Hasn't anybody been paying attention. You, the American people have spoken. You want ethanol in your gasoline and are happy to pay .45/gal. subsidy to have it even though it doesn't do a damn thing for you. You are more likely to get worse gas mileage with no environmental improvement at all because of auto electronic tuning systems.

Then when it takes 2500...that's 2500 GALLONS of fresh water to make ONE...that's ONE fucking gallon of ethanol...you bitch about not having your fucking yuppie shower heads. Which is it people ?

But hey...don't fuck with them, they know what they want and they want it now. Oh but who do I pick to get my ridiculous partison shots in...say Bush & Co. ? I am sure they have the latest and greatest shower heads.

Perhaps we could get some legislation passed mandating a composite toilet paper, instead of all of this cotton waste generated.

Good question. I wasn't aware that a shower was a partisan sort of thing.

That it was in the Wall Street Journal and was blaming the Obama administration.
