BonesFromAsh -> A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/25/2010 9:51:07 PM)

I came across the idea of a clothing diet while reading one of my favorite blogs http://unclutterer.com/

The idea of six items or less was also featured in the New York Times http://video.nytimes.com/video/2010/07/22/style/1247468489339/six-items-or-less.html

Another example is discussed on this site http://www.thegreatamericanappareldiet.com/about/  where the challenge is to go without purchasing any new clothing for a year.

This got me wondering how many people would be willing to give something like this a try.  How important is you wardrobe and accumulating new (or thrift store "new") pieces to you?  Could you go for a month...a year...without buying something new?  Why or why not?

I could do without buying clothing since I wear so much black, but I could not stop buying accessories. I am addicted. I love jewelry, handbags and shoes and you cannot have enough.

That way, if you do only wear 6 items, it looks different each time because of how you accessorize.

littlewonder -> RE: A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/25/2010 9:58:07 PM)

I could go a month, even two months but a year?

Nope, can't do it. I like clothes, I like being able to have fresh, new suits to wear at work and when I travel I always end up seeming to forget some piece of clothing at home that I need.

Arpig -> RE: A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/25/2010 9:59:30 PM)

No problem at all...I wear my clothes until they wear out...I still have a rugby jersey I wore in high school (though its somewhat tighter on me than it was then[;)]

Summary: She wore one dress (actually, 7 identical copies of the same dress) for 365 days.  She used accessories to change things up from day to day.

I don't buy new clothes that often. I bet if I really cleaned out my closet with stuff I don't wear anymore, I'd have all the space I need!!

Thanks for the links.  There is something to be said for being creatively frugal.

Being pretty much broke, I haven't bought anything new in the last year [:'(]

BUT - I did make the effort to lose weight so that the lovely clothes I have in the back of my closet fit me again, so in effect I have loads of new clothes! [:D]

That has to be the BEST way of all to get new clothes!

myotherself -> RE: A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/26/2010 5:15:13 AM)

absolutely!

And I'd forgotten I'd bought a pair of pvc jeans on eBay and then threw them in the back of the wardrobe because they were just waaaay too tight. They are now my absolutely fave pants! [:D]

I got a job installing computers last august. I had to go out and buy a couple pairs of shorts for it. So it's almost been a year. Nope, not a problem.

I am sorta that way, tho I have alot of clothes- simply so I dont have to do laundry right away.

But I wear basically the same stuff.

DesFIP -> RE: A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/26/2010 6:22:03 AM)

When you listen to the video, they specify that they don't limit accessories, so it really isn't as rigid as it seems. A pair of jeans is a pair of jeans, one pair of black pants is like another. But I would say that not being allowed to replace socks for an entire year wouldn't work for me. They wear out and I won't wear them with holes.

sunshinemiss -> RE: A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/26/2010 6:23:59 AM)

Hey Bones,
That is basically what I do.  I was packing for a year away, and I *knew* there was no way I could get much in the way of clothes.  I mean there is *one* store that I know of in the entire country that has anything bigger than a size 6 for women (no I'm not kidding).  I've heard there are more stores, but I can't find them.

When I was here the last time and visited Hawaii, I took an empty suitcase, went to thrift stores, cheap clothing stores, etc. so that I could fill it up.  I knew I wouldn't be taking any of it back with me.

I will tell you that I got a package a few weeks ago with A DOZEN BLOUSES!!!!  wooooooooooooo hoooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!  I felt like it was Christmas!  Some of them are things I'd never usually wear, but most were pretty good.  It cost 50 bucks to ship them.  I'd told the sender "just go to a thrift store" and she did.  I can't tell you what a thrill that is!  I had to buy hangers!

I used to have a pretty standard "uniform".  All black with a groovy jacket (I was once known for my crazy jackets).  It was fun.  Now, I can't gain or lose weight - where would I get clothes?  *eep!  I actually have been losing a bit, and now I pull my pants up and down without unzipping them.  Pretty soon, I'm going to have to weave a belt!

Best,
sunshine

EBay doesn't count as shopping...right? And shopping is required to buy new clothes...right?

I do not shop. I hate it.
Sure i do the groceries and essentials, but i do not like malls. Ever. Ick.[image]http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/dislikesmiley.gif[/image]

If i can't find it at Target, i turn to EBay.

tropicalhoney -> RE: A new "diet"....NOT another fat thread! (7/26/2010 7:13:04 AM)

I had to buy new shoes when I went north last winter as I had none with closed toes and heels, but other than that it has been over a year since I bought anything new. I tend to live in shorts and t-shirts which are forgiving of some weight loss. Fortunately for me, as I have lost some, I have a wardrobe of many sizes and it all seems like new when I get back into them.

I put myself on a shopping restriction last year when I got the second 'bad accountant, thousands in taxes and penalties due' surprise.

With the job I have now, I don't spend a lot on clothing anyway. Today, jeans and t-shirt...yay! The only things I've really bought have been bras, undies and shoes. I will NOT wear a pair of sneakers for a year. With all of the walking I do, the support breaks down after a few months of wearing and I won't subject my feet to that.

Plus, as the above states, I've also been losing weight so I can just shop in my closet/spare room! It's been loads of fun.

Also, regarding diet and actual food.........for anyone that has a long struggle with food and dieting, I HIGHLY recommend the book  'Women Food and God', by Geneen Roth. My daughter has been obese since her teens. This book has literally changed her life. And no, it's not really as religious as it sounds.
