ORIGINAL: LaTigresse http://www.gameo.org/encyclopedia/contents/K25.html I've always heard the Amish and Mennonite were very different. That they have many of the same customs but Mennonites are far more liberal in what they allow. Very much different in many ways. The Mennonites that live around my home, you would likely never even notice a difference in regular people and Mennonite. Perhaps a bit more conservative in dress, and guaranteed your not going to hear a "MOTHERFUCKING SON OF A BITCH COCKSUCKER" out of one of my neighbouring Mennonites but otherwise, they just blend in with the rest of us. Also, there are varying sects within both. The rules of each sect are often very subtle. Example, in some Amish, the colouring of the clothing is strictly monitored....blacks, dark blues, etc. Whereas others are allowed to wear pastels etc. Some are allowed motorized tractors but without rubber wheels and others, no motors at all. They do marry relatives and most in the Kalona area are related to some degree to most everyone. This creates many health problems, not just mental retardation. I've heard rumours, but do not know whether it is fact or not, that some Amish communities will actually pay a young man to marry in and become Amish. Just to bring new blood into the community. http://www.medfriendly.com/amish.php5
