I've always heard the Amish and Mennonite were very different.

That they have many of the same customs but Mennonites are far more liberal in what they allow.

Very much different in many ways. The Mennonites that live around my home, you would likely never even notice a difference in regular people and Mennonite. Perhaps a bit more conservative in dress, and guaranteed your not going to hear a "MOTHERFUCKING SON OF A BITCH COCKSUCKER" out of one of my neighbouring Mennonites but otherwise, they just blend in with the rest of us. Also, there are varying sects within both. The rules of each sect are often very subtle.

Example, in some Amish, the colouring of the clothing is strictly monitored....blacks, dark blues, etc. Whereas others are allowed to wear pastels etc. Some are allowed motorized tractors but without rubber wheels and others, no motors at all.

They do marry relatives and most in the Kalona area are related to some degree to most everyone. This creates many health problems, not just mental retardation. I've heard rumours, but do not know whether it is fact or not, that some Amish communities will actually pay a young man to marry in and become Amish. Just to bring new blood into the community.

I agree.

The two groups are close to the same- from my perspective.

My neighbors' son converted and became Amish.

I don't know whether he was paid but watching him walk around an urban suburb that he grew up in with the beard and the clothes was hilarious.

I have to be honest. I have never known anyone that became Amish or Mennonite. Only the reverse.

I know individuals I like and respect but the faith itself, I have no respect for.

FR,

This cracks me up.   One thread about decent, upright and righteous Americans and their absolute right to own guns and blast the brains out of people.  Now, a thread about an evil minority of dangerous fruitcake pacifists who are spreading like a cancer across the land.  I bet their collective carbon footprint is disgustingly low, too.

I probably need to re-examine my understanding of words like 'civilised' and 'advanced'.

~Fast Reply~

My experiences with the groups have always been positive.

I'm not surprised there is incest and other examples of terrible behavior. I watched a show the other day about a mother who forced her daughter into prostitution as a child. I have, personally, been told that it was my fault that I got molested and had a friend nearly raped and couldn't press charges because of a techinicality. That doesn't mean the non-Amish civilation is a terrible place full of horrible human beings. I'm entirely uncomfortable judging another group of people, and their religion, because of terrible that things that also happen outside of their community.

To me, that indicates that the problem isn't that they are Amish. None of these things acceptable but they don't seem to be a problem that only the Amish have, or have in a disportionate amount.

Before White Man came here, Women worked hard, took care of children, sweep the teepee, keep the fire burning. Have dinner done when we get home. We had no government, no taxes, nothing like that. We were happy people. Man went and hunted. Woman cleaned and cooked the meat. Tended garden, raised our children.

Then White Man came ...........

Need I say more ?

Every community has good and bad. I'm sure the Southern Baptists beat and abuse their own children too. But the Amish get more press because they aren't integrated among the general population. And people like ripping off public images to reveal the dirt beneath.
