Marini -> Actual Bush quotes on Immigration/Guest Workers Policies! (7/28/2010 9:56:38 PM)

Sanity's post about Obama sending more illegal immigrants back than Bush, made me almost fall off the bed, laughing.

Bush was in bed with big business and there was no way in hell, he was going to deprive or dissapoint all his buddies in big business.
Unions are evil!
We need more guest workers!
Damn these spoiled Americans that normally want/need/or demand a living wage!
How close to slavery can we get, how little can we pay 'em, give them no benefits and send 'em back to Mexico?
Hell, if we can get temporary workers to come and work for almost nothing, we might be able to even cut back on outsourcing soon!
Hell the sky is the limit

Bush did not want to send anyone back!
Is short term memory really that bad?
Sanity sure as they day is long, you don't remember good old boy, George Bush and his guest worker policies
?

lol, come on now, as much as I hated him, even I heard a few of his speeches on how we needed more guest workers to come here to do the jobs that Amerikans don't want to do!

Here we go for those whose memories appear to be very, very, short.
Just for shits and giggles and to help connect the last 8 years to how we got to where we are right now.

Our economy could not function without the immigrants
We hear claims that immigrants are somehow bad for the economy, even though this economy could not function without them. All these are forms of economic retreat, and they lead in the same direction, toward a stagnant and second-rate economy.

Reversed GOP’s support fo English-only education
Hispanics voted for Gore by a margin of 62-35 in the 2000 election. But Kerry carried Latinos by a bare nine points. Why the change? Because George W. Bush has worked overtime on appealing to the Hispanic vote. His eagerness to address them in Spanish, his sponsorship of a guest worker program for immigrants, and his Texas background all maximize his appeal to Hispanic voters. Bush also gained among the highly religious Catholic Hispanic vote by his opposition to gay marriage and his strong support for religious values. Remember also that Bush reversed the Republican Party’s support for English-only public education and stopped cuts in school funding for the children of illegal immigrants.
But there is nobody with Bush’s record on Hispanic concerns running for the GOP nomination in 08. Neither Giuliani nor McCain nor Frist nor any of the other candidates would have the appeal that Bush has had for Hispanic voters.

It’s time to permit temporary guest workers
America’s immigration system is outdated, unsuited to the needs of our economy and to the values of our country. We should not be content with laws that punish hardworking people and deny businesses willing workers and invite chaos at our border. It is time for an immigration policy that permits temporary guest workers to fill jobs Americans will not take, that rejects amnesty, that tells us who is entering and leaving our country, and that closes the border to drug dealers and terrorists.

Temporary workers ok, but no amnesty
Q: What should we do about the 8,000 people cross our borders illegally every day?
BUSH: We’re increasing the border security of the US. There ought to be a temporary worker card that allows a willing worker and a willing employer, so long as there’s not an American willing to do that job, to join up. I don’t believe we ought to have amnesty. I don’t think we ought to reward illegal behavior. There are plenty of people standing in line to become a citizen. If they want to become a citizen, they can stand in line, too. And here is where my opponent and I differ. In September 2003, he supported amnesty for illegal aliens.

KERRY: We need a guest-worker program. We need is to crack down on illegal hiring. And thirdly, we need an earned-legalization program for people who have been here for a long time, stayed out of trouble, got a job, paid their taxes, and their kids are American. We got to start moving them toward full citizenship, out of the shadows.

Mexico: immigration reform in exchange for oil development
Bush envisioned a Mexican border open to labor, to trade, and open to investment-especially investment in energy. Mexico had banned foreign investment in its energy industry in 1938, and ever since, Mexican oil production has been controlled by the creaky, corrupt, and polluting state monopoly, Pemex. If Mexico opened itself to the exploration and development of its oil resources by American entrepreneurs & technology, Mexican oil might possibly displace Arab oil from the US market altogether.
For this energy “quid,” Mexico would of course demand some equally valuable “quo”-and in Bush’s mind that “quo” was immigration reform. Bush believed that immigration was valuable to the US and praised it again and again in public speeches and his private conversations.

So the Bush administration designed a system for regularizing the Mexican-US labor relationship-not an amnesty like that of 1986, but a grander system for enabling Mexicans to work in the US temporarily and then to go home again.

Source: The Right Man, by David Frum, p. 84-85 Jun 1, 2003 More border guards to compassionately turn away Mexicans
We must do a better job of stopping those who seek to come into our country illegally. I support strict border enforcement programs such as Operation Hold the Line, which concentrate border patrol officers and resources at known border-crossing points. I believe it is far more compassionate to turn away people at the border than to attempt to find and arrest them once they are living in our country illegally.

Make INS more “immigrant friendly”
Bush [would] divide the INS into two agencies: one to deal with the enforcement components of border protection and interior enforcement, and another to deal with the service components of naturalization. Bush will change the INS policy so that spouses & minor children of permanent residents can apply for visitor visas while their immigration pending. He will reverse the presumption that such family members will violate their terms of admission, and will encourage family reunification.

The way things are going, many may wish we could get good old George back!
We need more guest workers, we surely don't have enough

double post

tazzygirl -> RE: Actual Bush quotes on Immigration/Guest Workers Policies! (7/28/2010 10:13:05 PM)

I posted the following on another thread...

quote:

I have said that America does not stop at its border, that wherever there is an American, there is America

....... and i figured i would get landblasted for my arrogance.

Unfortunately, that wasnt the case. I can only assume that those who ignored that post actually believe in the accuracy of such a statement.

However, the original statement was not mine. I changed mexican/mexico for american/america. The original was Calderon's, speaking to the illegals in the US.

Guess he was right after all.

Marini -> RE: Actual Bush quotes on Immigration/Guest Workers Policies! (7/28/2010 10:25:33 PM)

tazzy, if we need guest workers, let them work here and make them legal citizens.

Gosh forbid we make them all citizens and then big business might have to pay a legal wage and maybe even benefits.
Hell one day, they might even create unions!
Then it will be time to send them back!

tazzy, I have always felt that working under the table for less money, no benefits, and not even being a citizen, was similar to indentured servitude.

But, indentured servitude, slavery and outsourcing is not the American way.
silly me
[;)]

Well this whole house of cards is crumbling soon, when it all falls down, let's pray the new America, will be better.

tazzygirl -> RE: Actual Bush quotes on Immigration/Guest Workers Policies! (7/28/2010 10:30:22 PM)

I almost agree. Except, i cant help but wonder about those still in mexico, and other parts of the world, who have done all the legal moves required to be a citizen here... and who will have to wait even longer because we have to sort out the "pathway" mess.

tazzy, surely you realize this has virtually nothing to do with fair immigration policies for everyone wanting to come to America from around the world?

Did you see the post where Bush said he would grant amnesity and citizenship, if we could drill for oil in Mexico?

With all that is going on now over immigration, you rarely here anything about immigration reform, because that is not the major issue at hand.

If you want to immigrate to America quickly, the best way is walking across that border like everyone else that is doing it.
Seriously, if I lived in another country and was desperate to live in America, I would have made it to Mexico a long time ago, and worked it out after I got in America.
We have millions coming in that way, one more won't make a difference.

tazzygirl -> RE: Actual Bush quotes on Immigration/Guest Workers Policies! (7/28/2010 10:37:57 PM)

Of course it doesnt. But people tend to only see one side of issues. There are many sides to the immigration problem. The one i addressed is but one.

As in all areas of life, there are always many sides to each and every story or situation.

This whole "immigration debate/ South Americans and others entering and staying in this country without going through the "formal immigration process", years and years of these "guest worker policies", the wall, whether to even guard the borders, what to do about our borders, the process involved to legally immigrate into the United States policies, those in this country that are not here legally, on and on, and etc. are issues that are intertwined yet tied together.

One of the reasons I created this post, was to sit and look at what has been going on the past 10 years, because we have been dealing with this issue for so long, many have very short memories and really forget the GWB policies that put us in the place we are now.So often, people only look at right now, and not what even happened 5-10 years ago.

I think one of the reasons our country is so bad off now, is many American people often seem to act/or think like children with very short term memories, and quickly forget what policies were created in the not so distant past, that put us exactly where we are.

President Obama is dealing with 8 years of Bush policies, 8 years of Clinton policies, and before that Daddy Bush.
The past 20 years are very critical to what is going on in our country.

As far as I am concerned, and will continue to say, a lot of the suffering that we are experiencing today started in the mid 80s, with rampant unbridled outsourcing policies, but so many people see so very little, and remember even less.
There are no easy answers or solutions, and at the end of the day, more questions than answers.

NAFTA - which Clinton signed, and Republicans applauded, a death toll for 1000's of American jobs.   I think it was either Ronnie or George Sr that got it going.

Kudos to the OP on this one! Some don't want to forget "W" Bush. He was President for 8 years (knock on wood) and we are STILL in the tidal wave of his own policies. Thanks and even cheers to OP!

BINGO, in the not so distant future I plan to start a thread on just a few of the many policies and things that went down, that for the first time in my life, I didn't even want to vote in a Presidential election.
I voted for the first time at 18, and voted proudly Democratic until I really looked at a lot of what went down under President Clinton.

I was livid and pissed, I almost considered voting for Bush, in my anger at Clinton.
I did not and proudly voted for Gore, but good old slick willy helped me start looking harder at the Dems, and though I doubt I will ever vote Republican, I am prouder to be a Moderate than a Democrat any day of the week.

Even though I always {so far} vote for Democrats, they have been losing my respect for years.
Unlike others, I don't just give the Dems my respect, they fucking need to earn it.

Don't even get me started on the other positions and policies I blame "Slick Willy" for, I need to save something for my thread.
