In my case, not exactly, I am less restrained online, and a bit wittier, more confident. I have found that this online persona then affected my meatlife one. It's kinda cool actually.

But the answer should be yes for everyone except for those scams and spams, and the wankers deciding to be a woman online to get whack material.

If we are careful with our choice of words, and if the reader is careful reading, then yes, we can express who we are. But of course, this is the aim of most writers. Is it always achieved? No. Is it still worth pursuing? Yes.

I write what I think and I say what I think. In real life this leads to terms being thrown around such as "big words". Online i'm mostly the same way in that I let my mind just say what it wants, I self censor accordingly so I would say online i'm much more restrained. My punctuation may but just god awful but my word acumen is forever growing. An example would be the word "neophyte" which I have seen in some fiction I read mostly involving initiates in a cult, so I look it up, use it as much as I can in a day and bam it's now part of my vocabulary.

I am really irreverent, outspoken and very much "off the cuff" in real life as well as here. I don't candycoat things in either place, although I do try and temper that a bit more than when I was younger.

Words, I like words and often when writing a word comes to mind to describe something, a word I don't normally use, but it comes and I have to go in search of that word's meaning, it's spelling, and it's origin only to find it fits perfectly what I was trying to say. Writing on internet forums is the only way I get to write any more, and better in a way, because inputting words via keystrokes on a keyboard is writing I can do without messing up the presentation by smudging ink or crumpling paper, not to forget the plain indelible spelling mistakes and there the waste of paper. But from time to time I do put pen to paper and that with ancient fountain pens I restore for the pleasure for writing is an art

But writing on internet forums, well, they are my outlet in a noisy confused world, a soap box where the quiet man can have a say about the things they experience around them. For me personally, they have helped over the years, for they are contact with the outside world when the outside world is a place to hide from and feel safe from, the reclusive in me.

What I say when I write on line is the true me, thoughts and feelings expressed away from a noisy distractive world, a place where I can think clear and unhindered and when I write in response to others, I am engaged in learning more and more all the time and there modifying my views the more I learn. I write with truth as without truth the response is not learning and that goes against what I seek of my communication with others.

Then there is the international aspect, for on line brings people in far away places to communicate together and there learn what we cannot otherwise do about each other and how the world impacts us in our different ways, the world village, maybe.

Even if part of the reflection is distorted, part of it is not.

My words are more transparent than many because this is the choice I made for my own life and it works for me. No more masks to be what others expect me to be.

For the second question, yes, part of who we are, but not the entire picture. When someone reads my posts, they cannot see me with the cats I love, around my family, my love of books and cartoon movies, old shows, and Pokemon games and other strange quirks.

Those that come here hiding behind made up personas...this also says something about them. If someone comes here to start fights all the time, this is also a reflection of part of their nature. I'm not always sure what it means about them...I'm not psychic.

Just like a one night stand cannot tell you all about a person sexually, you can see a bit of them.

Although that is what the word originally meant, it now has a wider meaning. If this is the first time you've ever played golf, then you're a neophyte. It has come to be a synonym for beginner.

Now this is an interesting question.

My opinion is no. What you see online in a forum is not representative of that person. In most cases it is an idealized version of the person. They attempt to distill themselves down to a condensced essence. They drag up parts of themselves that they are terrified to expose in real life. Also people have more time to consider their words and craft their posts. There is also the lack of body language. I read somewhere that the actual words only account for 10% of actual communication between people.

So no I don't think most people are online like they are in person. And before I get blasted, yes some people may be the same online and off, but I still highly doubt most people are.

I think it depends on various factors.
- how well someone writes
- how honest someone writes
- their mood
- the topic

For me, I am pretty much myself. Of course, it is not possible to really know or see the multifaceted aspects of someone online, but I consider it a peek into the person.

One thing I find is that if I like someone's sense of humor, I feel more positive towards them. On the other hand, I am a bit sarcastic and blunt, so I find that many misinterpret that as being inflammatory or mean, and that is not the case at all.

There are some very sensitive folks who venture into the forums, many of whom remain so, as evidenced by some on this very thread who keep mentioning how they felt persecuted as a neophyte despite the many, many supportive and fun posts that person received on their own thread.

Like everything else online, I take it all with a grain of salt.

a grain of salt or a grain of sand are all in the begiining to either a pit of salt or a wide open beach and yes all things heard online do need to be taken as such. And yes lacking body language or emphasis on certain words can be detrimental to the conversation over all.
