What I've seen is this used as "testing" and I've seen it used by both parties. The idea is to test the other person to see if they are really a slave or really a master, the problem is, this always happens at the start of a relationship as a shortcut to building real trust. When the master or slave fails, the person "testing" can say they weren't a real master/slave/dom/sub and continue on their fruitless journey. Conversely I've seen where the person "passed the tests" and was given total trust only to later be discovered they weren't what they claimed at all.

There is no substitute for real communication, spending real time to get to know the other person, or for the courage necessary to risk.
