I'm not quite sure how it works in the US, but in the UK most munches have a munch phone that gets switched on on the day of the munch, or a couple of days before. Find the Fet group for a munch you want to go to-the number will be listed there. Post on the group message board to say you want to go but you're a munch newbie and you're kind of nervous, and then when you get near the venue ring the munch phone and someone will come out to get you, so you don't have to make the decision to walk inside by yourself.

Sound doable?

That sounds much more pleasant that what I had built up in my mind as a high pressure situation like a job interview. I would still prefer to know someone as I would probably end up a wall flower the entire time i'm there. Hopefully my time here will allow me to know someone who would like to guide me a bit, if not I think if that munch phone idea is here in the US that would be the most viable option for me.

It's not high pressure at all-it's literally a group of people sitting in a bar/cafe/whatever chatting. The ones I've been to have been pretty easygoing.

Most munches here also have designated meeters'n'greeters-if you're doing a wallflower routine they should spot you and introduce you around. They'll be used to dealing with nervous new people-no matter how shy you think you are they *will* have come across worse

I have been the munch buddy for LOTS of folks over the years. It can be very intimidating to walk in to a room full of strangers, who all "seem" to know each other! Many munches have a host or hostess. Write to that person, tell them you are new, ask to be introduced!

There is a bulldozer in every crowd who is the greeter, I would not worry about being a wallflower unless you are everywhere! Smile pretty, don't chew with your mouth open, don't be a douche. It's pretty much foolproof.

I've never heard of a "munch phone". When LadyPact and Mr. P were coming to our munch last night, from out of town, I gave her my cell phone number and told her to call me when they got to the parking lot, and I would come out to get them (we're in a back room at a restaurant and there is a shortcut thru the back door). They got there a bit early and just wandered on in on their own (brave souls!). I can't remember the headcount, but I think there was between 50 and 60 people there, and between me introducing them to people and other people just coming over to introduce themselves, I'm pretty sure they met every single person there!

We do have some unofficial greeters, who make sure that no one stands around looking lost. Although pretty much all of us tend to keep our eyes open for that sort of thing.
