TheRaptorJesus -> PhilosoRaptor: 1st Edition! (8/5/2010 11:08:27 PM)

This is my gift to you, the denizens of the CM forums. Editions of enlightenment at sporadic intervals. Everyone could use some more philosophical discussion in their lives, and who better to bring it to you than a Raptor?

If actions are stronger than words, why is the pen mightier than the sword?

Topic for discussion: Words or actions, which are of more value?

Both can carry immense weight and gravity and can have profound effects on people or events. Actions usually will leave greater consequences, but an action itself is transient, words (specifically those on a page) are eternal. Words are what document an action.

Actions can kill, main, destroy, or create.

Words can spur on actions and can grant immortality.

What say you?

Enlightenment at 1 am can rarely be a good thing. [:D]
I am curious about your generosity though. Was it inspired by your worship services?

TheRaptorJesus -> RE: PhilosoRaptor: 1st Edition! (8/5/2010 11:17:56 PM)

No, it was not! Despite my omniscience I hadn't seen that. I'll have to be EXTRA generous now! Lurking in the off-topic section, I hadn't seen much of this sort of topic, so I figured I could bring a new sphere of discussion to the unwashed masses.

Feel free to contribute to this topic as well though, my child!

I will most likely expand upon my own beliefs regarding this topic tomorrow.

Because it's actually actions SPEAK louder than words, not stronger?

Implying more noise vs impact?

It's late, that's my contribution.

Nice post.

Intellectual discourse, yay.

The pen (or the key board) mighty be mightier than the sword but the mods prefer you to use the Report button.

Where's the fun in that I ask you?

heartcream -> RE: PhilosoRaptor: 1st Edition! (8/5/2010 11:28:56 PM)

Actions speak louder than words because no matter what you say if the manifestation of those very words doesnt appear they are simply empty untrue words. Although words can do crippling damage as well.

That is why the pen is mightier than the sword because laws can be passed that affect loads of people without directly killing them you can still kill them with paper. Or save them too.

I dont think either of these statements are absolute anyway. Sometimes the sword is pretty freaking mighty. Although oft times Someone wrote someone to use the sword in the first place. Sometimes words are so fantastic there is no action needed to surpass them. It can be a bit of all it at different times in different situations huh?

The keyboard is indeed mighty.

Dark Side of the Moon would not be what it was without the dulcet sounds of Richard Wright's expert fingers. If the keyboard can create Us and Them, it is indeed mighty.

Oh... you meant the other kind of keyboard.

Words are a part of art. But creating art is an action. Circular thoughts.

I think this phrase was created by a mute. (no disrespect intended)
You can't have words without actions, because in order to speak,
your mouth must move. (Unless you are a ventriloquist!)
However, one can act without speaking. (especially where gags are involved)

I'm here to derail this thread.

Too late.

Words can be lies.  Words can be misinterpreted.  Words, when spoken or written in haste, especially to harm, might not represent the truth.

It is far more difficult to 'act' a lie.

But wouldn't that give more power to words then?

It's not a question of morality but one of significance. The power to deceive is a good'un.

It depends on the context.

Actions (or inaction) are the proof of the honesty of words.  I try to take things at face value, but sometimes there is much to discover when words and actions do not match.  When it comes to this point, I choose to believe the actions and call bullshit on the words.

Words also have the power to wound just the way that a fist does. There have been times in my past relationships that a carelessly worded comment has stuck with me until the relationship ended, I just would never forget some things that were said. It is why we need to be careful with how we say things...

So while actions are important in this world, so are the words we use...

Words: the expression of thought.

Action: the execution of thought.

Words may last forever, but are often distorted in time.

A specific action may only last moments, but the consequence of that action can cause a never ending chain of events.

Seems to me, they are equal in their ability to affect, and perception is the determining factor, as to whether or not effect is favorable.

Perception; 9/10 of the law.
