Now see, I switched from Advantage to Frontline.

I wonder if location, and which product was used most in that location, matters?

Just me I guess but I would get an exterminator...pay the bucks...get the guarantee…go to the vet with the animals…follow their advice and be done with it.

Due to trying to get caught up on my heat bill, and other bills, to include the dentist--    many days I eat bread, or hotdogs for dinner.

Today is such a day.

I eat a good breakfast--  then maybe a sandwhich-   dinner tho is bread and or hotdogs.

I hope to be caught up by January.

nothing is being shut off-

for now.

Some of the flea collars out there are toxic to humans and animals are NOT a good idea. I don't know of all the kinds out there, but I am thinking of those hard white plastic ones from way back that smelled awful and buckled onto your pet.

and collar (if the cat will tolerate it)

Yeah they're not like that anymore, my former cat who went outside often had a soft collar that repelled fleas from the vet, but my current cat won't wear one without attempting to hang himself. He's mostly an indoor cat though and has never had fleas. They definitely aren't for all animals that's for sure.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 12:46:39 PM)

I got fleas once (eta in the house, not on me-lolol) and my grandmother suggested putting pie tins with Dawn dishwashing detergent and a lil water (75% Dawn and 25% water) enough to cover the bottom of the pan bout a 16th of an inch deep.  Put them all around, we put 4 in the living room, 2 in the hall, etc.  The next morning each pan was full of fleas.  We did that for 3 days and then went and got Advantix for the dog and the fleas were gone and never came back.

Those between the shoulder blades flea killers are awesome!  Worth every penny.  I haven't seen a flea in 5 years.

Good luck!

I change about every 3 years.  One quit working and the vet told me that it is best to rotate them.  It has worked great!

I dont think they made it upstairs.

Fleas will  die if there is no host to suck blood.

Did you check yourself??? Eg...in your private areas??? Maybe they do travel upstairs with you on a regular basis[8|]

Hunkie,

Just go buy another pack of bombs.  You know if we didn't care and worry about you we wouldn't harass you about it.

WOW...thats an idea....I do agree, they don't like dishwasher....I am desperate that my kittens turn old enough to get flea treatment as they are awfully infested and I am getting quite tired of temporarily relieving them from their fleas (after all I can't treat their mother either as long as she feeds them).

So four more weeks and the killing spree will start big time here [:)]

I read online the advice to use hot water with the dishwasher as that person would have seen sometimes fleas jumping out again...I don't know how true that is but I follow that advice when my boys get...temporarily freed from them [&:]

Don't even get me started on ticks.

Thankfully ticks don't appear to be an issue here. I agree, I can't stand ticks either and where I was living from 2001-2003 my two cats often had ticks and once one of those buggers thought they can suck blood from my foot whilst I was asleep [>:]

Over here despite having 4 adult cats (and now two kitten) not once did I have to remove a tick and that since 3 years [:)]
One plus for living here for now [:)]

I know.   :-)

I been getting the place ready- using up produce - and getting garbage and old papers out.

The packs are not expensive- if anything they would run out of them.

It is $5.30 for a pack of 4.  So money - you know buying another pack is not a big deal. I am trying to think if I need anything else to combine the errands.

finalcut -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 2:27:25 PM)

buy 20 mule team borax too. sprinkle it on carpet (broom into carpet )or floors and leave it a few days. vacuum and repeat. it suffocates them. some say salt as it dries out the larvae but someone also said it ruined their vacuum. the borax alone worked for me. walmart brands of flea stuff on the back of the neck worked good together with it. 3 treatments for like 6 bucks. no need for pricey stuff.

best of luck!

Yeah but it's not an open 2000 sq ft.

Do what you want, but I will bet you a blow job and a new pair of shoes the fleas return is you skip any rooms and don't get your cat dipped.

I'll send the chap stick to PA. Be sure to let him know what size shoes to buy you. and NO mandals!

CynthiaWVirginia -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 2:36:39 PM)

I used a flea bomb for the hallway, bathroom, etc.  Put newspapers down in at least a 6 foot square or the wetness will stain your hardwood floors.  Follow the directions exactly.

Once the flea population is down, forget flea collars and all that...they won't prevent the house from having a new infestation, even after the second bombing.  Go to a vet (or order online) and buy Advantage.  It has imidicloprid and is excellent for killing all the fleas.  If you find a cool vet who will write you a prescription for largest dog size, each dog size will have about 8 cat doses, so it ends up costing about a dollar or two per month.  If you cannot measure out 4/10 of a cc and squirt it onto the cat's neck above the shoulder blades, then stick to the prepackaged cat's dose, though it will cost a lot more.

This stuff gets rid of all worms except tape worm, and if put very high up the neck, it also kills ear mites.  A vet recommended doing this for ear mites, and I can vouch for it.  The newest little girl I adopted was loaded with all kinds of worms as well as ear mites...they're all gone now, though I had to buy pills for the tape worms.  If your cat has fleas, better keep watching that butt to see if something white moves, or if what looks like dried brown rice is sticking to it's fur.  Fleas can carry tapeworm eggs/larvae and when a cat chews their fleas...

Before I used this stuff, I bathed the animals in Dawn (kills fleas, my sister uses this on her dogs), used cheap dog flea shampoo to mop my floors once or twice per month, AND I put down remnant fluffy blanket fabric from Joann Fabrics (about $2-3 each) to lure my cats into using these to lie down on, then I washed these in flea shampoo by hand or else washed them with the hot cycle in my washing machine.

There is an attachment for your garden hose that will put out flea poison into your yard to cut down on fleas, I used to have to do this when I worked for a couple in California who had dogs.

There is something called diatomaceous earth that is non toxic if you buy the type from Lowes in the plant department, and not from a pool supplies store.  It can be mixed with water (then I put it through a strainer) and used to spray the yard, mop the floor.  It dries and leaves a super fine powder residue that acts like ground glass to a bug.  Makes tiny breaks in their shells and makes them dry up.  (I have used this on bare mattresses to kill lice.)  Not good to use on pets, because it irritates and dries out eyes and mucus membranes.

I used to have to deal with roaches, as I lived in an apartment building that had an infestation and some hitched a ride when I moved into my house.  None exist in my house after that first year and I never used bombs or called an exterminator.  Ants might ignore ant bait, but they love roach bait.  Get Combat in that syringe type tube and put lines of the goo where your cat can't lick it up (yes, one of my cats started licking so I had to remove it quickly).  Also with the ants, I mix powdered sugar with diatomaceous earth and put this in empty match boxes at the back of kitchen drawers, and powder the bottom of trash cans with something waterproof on top to protect it from getting wet.  I hunted for ant colonies outside around my house.  I have found ant hills that were black with ants in a 12 inch radius around the hole.  I went into the house, got a gallon of water and mixed it with an ounce or so of flea shampoo...until the water was a bit slippery, then went outside and started pouring the whole thing in a circle around the ants and worked my way inward, and dumping 1/3 to 1/2 of the gallon down the hole.  All the ants died.  Less ants came into my house.  :)  Costed me maybe a dime or a quarter.

I buy cheap tupperware type things from the Dollar Tree, and keep grain products in them.  Other things like cookies and crackers I keep in zip lock bags.  Packages from stores often have little holes in them that ants will find.  Starve them out, but also trace where they entered into your house and plug up that hole or crack with some caulk.

I keep a trigger spray bottle handy with some dog flea shampoo very watered out for when I need to kill some bugs.  It kills flies and ants and spiders.  I prefer the cat flea shampoo, which is a light lavender instead of doggie green, as it is made with pyrethrin (natural ingredient that breaks down and is safe for cats) instead of permethrin (man made and can kill cats).

I stopped using foggers and spray cans of poison because it triggers my lymphoma.  The building I used to live in was sprayed every blessed week.  This is why I'm so strange about finding other ways.  I have two male cats that I allow outside, the girls I keep in the house.  Males are neutered, btw.  I use Advantage on them and the girls, and have no flea problems.  I don't have to do anything else to the yard or to the house, like I did before I "discovered" this stuff and used flea collars or grocery store stuff with pyrethrin to put between their shoulders.  This is so much easier.

Good luck.

is this a cream or a pill?

I will have to skin the cat-

Chrisincuffs -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 2:57:03 PM)

I've used the dawn dishsoap method to kill other creepy crawlees. It works very well. We mixed it in a spray bottle and sprayed the outside of the house and sidewalks. Rubbing alcohol with a few drops of dishsoap will kill any bug in it's path but it is poisonous and will kill plants as well. It also has to come in direct contact with the icky things

pahunkboy -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 3:33:53 PM)

Ok-  I went and bought the extra 4 cans.

No one was in the store- unlike the madhouse this AM.

LadyEllen -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 4:09:30 PM)

Ooh fleas! What fun!

You should have seen this place back in mid June (when we were having summer - its now autumn) - the place erupted in fleas! One of the drawbacks of a dozen or so cats I guess. A dish of goat's milk for the cats would gather a dozen drowning parasites within minutes. They were even in my bed - which is not good - transported by me (so yes Hunky, you have to treat everywhere).

All the cats were treated - at that time they were spending all their time outside anyway because of the weather. Then we kicked the Dyson into gear (the special model for allergens) and vaccumed everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Then we sprayed permethrin 3% everywhere whilst the washing machine worked overtime on kitty blankets et al. Within a day or so the eruption had died down - a week later it started again so a quick repeat was performed. Since then hardly a flea to be found which is much better, but we know theyll be back. Now all I need is for the scars on my legs to heal.

The new kittens were treated too - there is a spray that can be used within days of birth; damn good thing too considering how difficult it is to take a kitten from its mom and try to use a flea comb thats the same size as the kitten whilst said kitten is kicking and squealing for its mom!

LadyEllen -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 4:18:09 PM)

An "old wives tale" solution I was told was to use lemon juice to stop them biting you; apparently fleas hate it. Shame kitties do too.

Alternatively I found that my knee high boots with my jeans tucked in worked quite well too. Probably a bit difficult for bath and bed for most but being a domme and all of course I wear such footwear at all times.

Now, does anyone know how to restore leather thats been soaked in bubble bath?

pahunkboy -> RE: bad news. I must flea bomb the house (8/6/2010 4:34:38 PM)

Of course- I can not find the powder FOR the cat.

I may have to buy something for the cat.

A cream- spray or pill- I wonder why active ingredient is best?
