quote:
ORIGINAL: willbeurdaddy 1896? Couldnt you at least find something in the last 100 years? And imperialist actions, not words? It was widely reported that one of George Bush's staffers scornfully remarked:"You must be one of those reality-based people. We are an empire, we make our own reality.” During the GWB administration, the Administration actively promulgated the view that during wartime, the powers of the Presidency were unlimited. Literally, without any limit whatsoever. Those theories have been embraced and firmly cemented in place by the Obama Administration, which claims that it has the right to assasinate any American citizen without a trial or even charges. (I understand the pain it causes you to hear attacks on the Obama Administration, but please endure it). The Bush/ Obama Administrations also claim the right to kidnap and imprison any citizen of any country, snatching them from the soil of any country in the world, again without trials or charges. Imagine for a moment if Iran were to snatch an American citizen off the streets of Manhattan, and fly him to Tehran to be imprisoned. The Bush/ Obama Administrations assert the right to override the soveriegnty of any nation simply because it is in our interest to do so. Imagine if China were to launch cruise missiles into San Diego, simply to kill a Tibetan "terrorist". American Administrations dating back to the Cold War assert the need and right to station troops on 1,000 military bases around the world, simply to enforce our will and interests. Imagine if Russia were to install a military base in Cuba...oh, wait, never mind. America HAS in fact become what we fought against- a global Empire, not very much different than Britain under Victoria.
