soul2share -> RE: When Insomnia Attacks! (8/8/2010 4:54:02 AM)

I've been an insomniac since I was in the womb...literally.  I'd keep my mom up all night wandering around the womb.  My body clock is the exact opposite of everyone else's....I work midnights by choice because if I try to work days, I don't sleep at night, and at about the 3rd day of no sleep, I start to get goofy.

Melatonin works wonders.....I take it, but it seems like the more I take, the more I need.  I buy the highest dose on the shelf, and usually take 4-5 of them.  My doc suggested benedryl, I take 4 of them at a time.  I can't/don't take the tylenol because I take so much of it to sleep.  I like my liver......  Also, I have gotten addicted to Ny-Quil in the past.  Basically, all OTC sleep aids are simply an antihistamine.  I'm afraid to try the prescription stuff, I did try Rozerem, had a 30 day supply that I went thru in 12 days.

I'm what they call a twilight sleeper...I can fall asleep eventually, but I wake up every 2 hours.  When I take the sleep aids, I sleep for about 4 hours, wake up and I'm up and down the rest of the day...if I'm lucky.  Lately, I haven't been able to sleep once I wake the first time.....it's frustrating as all get out.  When I can't sleep, I'll try reading, and when that doesn't work, I'll surf, play games on pogo or clean.  I'm going to do the sleep study thing to see what it is that wakes me up.  I have been told by those few that have slept with me (in bed, not the sex!  Pervs!) that I twitch.....it starts at my toes and fingertips and works in to my torso.  Apparently, when I fall completely asleep, I do a huge full body twitch.  That may very well be what wakes me up.

The worst part about the whole insomnia thing is the frustration...there have been times when I'll just sit right down and cry, it's that bad.  I hate it!

I can fall asleep any time, I just can not stay asleep.  If I am in a strange place, it is 1,000 times worse.  The only thing that works for me is exercise.  When I exercise, strenuous or something as mild as a 45 minute brisk walk, I sleep more soundly.

soul2share -> RE: When Insomnia Attacks! (8/8/2010 5:52:39 AM)

Katy, sounds like you have the same type of insomnia I do....I wish exercising worked for me...all that does is give me a second wind and revs up my body, and it's even harder for me to go back to sleep.  I don't plan anything, or schedule anything, on days when I work..once I go outside into the light, forget about getting back to sleep.   And if I can't shut my mind down, same result......no sleep at all.  Unfortunately, I tend to worry alot.....usually about hings I have no control over.....my mind is like a hamster on a wheel...spinning totally out of control!

One thing that I do without fail...I only sleep and read in my bed.  I don't lay there to rest once I know I can't sleep, I don't eat, I don't watch tv or anything else but read and sleep.  Conversly, I don't nap or sleep on the couch or anywhere else, I may lay down on it to watch tv, but as soon as I feel myself drifting off, I get up and go to bed...sometimes, it works, sometimes it doesn't.  It's sorta luck of the draw.

Me too. I do have a recipe for an all natural Valerian Root and Chammomile tea that works wonderfully though; Usually knocks me out for a good 4 - 6 hours.

You've seen these threads that pop up every 2 or 3 weeks, asking where all the posters went who used to be here?

Well... never mind. It's probably best not to go into it.

Soul2, yes, you definately should get a sleep study done!
I did and they gave me a Cpap machine and it makes a huge differance!
It doesn't sound like you have that problem though (apnea)

i get insomnia once in a while and it can carry on for days or nights rather, if i dont do something.  what i do is take two neurofen, put my pillow down the other side of the bed and sleep the wrong end, i also kick my duvet off until im getting cold, then all the snugglyness of the duvet and getting warm sends me off -  for some reason that works really well.

last night, not for reasons of insomnia, just something i wanted to do.  but i turned all the lights out in my bedroom, turned on some soothing 'new agey' type music sat crosslegged on the floor, lit a candle and focused on the candle, and thought positive thoughts.  when i came round i was sooooo sleepy,  slept like the dead last night, best sleep ive had in ages in fact

soul2share -> RE: When Insomnia Attacks! (8/9/2010 3:43:58 AM)

I know Popeye...I've been putting it off for a while....my thinking is that I'll never be able to sleep hooked up to everything......I can't have anything on me when I'm in bed, and I'm sure I'll end up all wrapped up in the wires.....I tend to "travel" in bed.

I'm pretty sure I don't have sleep apnea, I don't jerk awake like some people do, I just sort of drift up when I wake up......it's almost like I can feel myself slowly waking up....even if I'm in the middle of a dream, I know I'm waking up.  It's the strangest sensation!

Also, it's a good thing that I am dreaming.....I dream in full color, movie length dreams.....they seem to have plots and everything.....weird ones sometimes, but still, it's a plot.
