Currently I read quite a few posts from people who seem to have started again with knitting, crocheting, sewing (or some like holly trying to manage cooking)...so what project are you up to and at what level you consider yourself to be at (I am not giving any gradings, the definition is up to you). Also where did you actually learn it?

Now, for me I recently got stuff to start knitting and crocheting, both I tried a lil bit in the past but never got far.

About 10 years ago I knitted socks but my mother never showed me things like the beginning and heal, etc...so I only did the main parts in between (and on the second sock my granny did the majority of it as my endurance and patience isn't the best...).
Also at school it was never a huge enough part to actually learn it...or maybe at least not for me...

However, now with soon getting rid of uni...or at least I hope so...I was wondering how else to fill my time within the future and so thought about investing time in there again to enhance my skills...also as it is reasonably cheap, which means a lot to me as I need finally start to watch my pennies if I wanna be able to make my move off this isle in 2012...

So I got some books from the library, some on amazon and some advice online. Eg casting on I learned from an online demo...

So I am a real basic beginner...but hope to manage one day a truly adorable jumper (the wool I already have for it) but also want to get socks done...and then I am trying to knit and crochet food items for my ex for december 2011 as my adventscalendar to him (yeah I know, long time ahead, but believe me, I will need it!!!) That way I have the chance to knit and crochet little projects which don't have to be too perfect as at the end they will be cut open by him anyway to get access to his lil pressies...furthermore it should improve my skills and my endurance on it...).

So therefore me, a beginner, muddling through mainly via books and online videos

In case anyone would need any food stuff to knit and crochet (though I doubt ) I am happy to share the pattern

I've been crocheting for decades.  My grandmother taught me when I was a teenager and I've kept up with it all these years.  I would consider myself at the expert stage now.  I've designed and crocheted handbags and children's clothing.
Right now I am making an afghan for a dear friend of mine who has been waiting patiently for ten years.  I'll give it to her on her birthday in October.

I'm quite good at sewing, too, but just never really got into making my own clothing.  I would sew dresses for my mother when she was still living but now I mostly use my sewing machine for hems or to sew the linings for the purses I crochet.

I would really love to learn how to bead and make costume jewelry.

I have the Happy Hooker crocheting book, which GUARANTEES that a knitter can learn to crochet... and I really haven't opened the book! LOL! And I SO want to get those granny squares (vintage!) attached together!! They will make a great mat to sit on when I am working in the basement.

Just because it took me 5 years to get to these suckers done does not mean that they're vintage....

I'm a stitcher.....as in cross-stitch....I've never been able to get knitting and crocheting.....in knitting, I can't seem to be able to end the  item....and crocheting.....can't get that either.  I'm quite good at cross stitching....I've done a couple of huge projects for gifts....two of them I had a hard time letting go of, they turned out so well.

This one I did for my bro-inlaw...he collects wolves.....

and I did this one for my mom......she collects koalas.....

I found a great site for patterns....patternsonline.com.  You can acually purchase JUST the pattern, or you can have them send it to you as a kit.  I have all my own threads and material already, and the store kits are so expensive, and inevitably run out of thread....this way is easier all the way around!

I've made scarves with knitting needles, but I only know one stitch.  :(  I have tried so hard to learn other stitches by reading knitting books, but I cannot figure out what in the world they are telling me to do, lol.  I need someone sitting beside me showing me the ropes.

I make hats with something called a Knifty Knitter.  All kinds of fluffy or eyelash yarn (I use 3-4 strands, one or two of them plain for more body than the eyelash yarn alone would give).  Some are for the family, but mostly they're for my oncologist's office, in a box that says "free hats."  I need to get busy soon, as I have been lazy and haven't knitted since the weather warmed up.

When I knit for family, I usually make sets...hat and scarf.  With the Knifty Knitter, I learned how to do a different stitch!  I thought I was a one trick pony, but their instructions actually taught me how to some kind of double knit thing when I'm making scarves.

I am a beginner at everything because I am so limited in what I can do.

I'm also a beginner with beading.  I'm much better with my sewing machine.

I crochet. Badly. And since I am super impatient, I would say I am a beginner. But I do love working on the blankets I started. They are going to be fun to gift.

My mom taught me about 10 years ago when we both had a snow day. I was given a refresher course last year after she had surgery to replace her knee replacement. Something to keep me busy while she slept, or was in therapy.

My mom had me sewing before I started school.  By age 12 I was hired to make garments and received referrals from that.  I have 38 years professional sewing under the belt and really want to do a set of YouTube videos on what I have learned.  I sew/design women's garments full time.  Mom didn't allow the word can't and we learned to do everything:  cook, can, garden, sew, crochet, knit, bead, and farm:  EVERYTHING.  At the time it was hell, but a blessing all these years later.   I was growing to believe that sewing/knitting is a dying art and am happy to see there are those who still enjoy.

Got 2 projects that need sewing (whipstitch) and I got 2 more projects next to me, one being the infamous penguin that I have been talking about.

Then there is another project or 2 in the closet of yarn.

I do the multitasking of projects...work on one then stopping and doing another.  Keeps my fingers nibble.

i taught myself to knit about 25 years ago.i can knit just about anything. an aunt taught me to crochet when i was a kid. i'm also a pretty good baking from scratch. birthday cakes especially. my mom is a seamstress , but i can only sew by hand.
ps to the knitters... there's a very nice book called naughty needles which has some pretty kinky stuff including a knit straight jacket flogger and whip.
edited to add- you can find the pattern for the whip online naughtyneedlesknitting.com

I learned to crotchet and embroider when I was just a kid. My great granny believed these were skills a woman needed to know. LOL I love to cross stitch. I haven't been able to for a little while because of vision problems, but a friend told me about a really cool magnifying sheet that you can attach to your project. I haven't checked it out yet, but it is on my to do list. (I'll admit most of the time I flit from one project to the next, but eventually I get finished) My mom taught me to cook when I was growing up. I've cooked in a few restaurants over the years. I'm one of those made from scratch downhome cooks. I've dabbled with painting, quilting, wood crafts, etc. I also sketch. So I'm pretty much all over the place. LOL
