Since Owner said we needed a new topic, I am taking one for the team down here.

There is a lot of talk about raising the age to receive social security as a way to save money, to "help" fix America's financial crisis.

How do you feel about this?
Those of us over 40 probably will not be affected.
There are so many people that have contributed that won't live to receive social security as it is.
If Congress raises the age, doesn't that just mean that less people will live long enough to get it?

What are they going to do, just keeping raising the age until you have to be 80 to get it?
I don't mind them raising the age for younger people, but if they do, what about those that aren't in a position to save much for retirement?

The way to fix Social Security is not to change the retirement age but to remove the tax on income subject to the tax.

I dont think raising the age, will fix it, just make it more difficult for those in the future to receive the benefits..

I could make a few comments, about bonuses and high incomes and learning to live with what ya got but life goes on and no matter how much you suggest some people get paid to much it will not change.

I don't see any way to avoid it. It has to happen. It's not "the" solution, but it's a solution - one of many pieces that will hopefully add up to get us a little closer to a stable, solvent Social Security system.

And, the ones that do manage to live long enough won't get it for long!
Isn't that the real and only reason to raise the age?

This would be completely unacceptable in private enterprise. No way should we do this unless we have a good idea of the problems we face. If the US cannot tell me what the deficit will be, as well as several methods of dealing with the problem, don't expect me to buy into any solution.

If the Social Security payouts are reduced, I want to see the branch of the government that administers it reduced as well. No point having them be the same size and deal with less work. I do NOT want to see a government that is at the same size or bigger that is accomplishing less good.

That's about it, in a nutshell! The only thing I'd add is that the longer they hold onto the money you paid in, the more interest they can collect on it. But from an accounting standpoint, the more people who die before they have a chance to start collecting, the healthier the fund.

No its a used band-aid fix to a problem that they could easily solve if theyd learn to manage their money. Like collecting debts owed to them, Last I checked most of the "needed" saving institutions are on their feet once again, why cant they start paying back the millions and millions in money they own? Why is it I get to be screwed for wars I had no say in, or laws I had no way to vote for and situations that I had no voice in. Them raising the age affects MY generation, the generation that just received the ability to vote. I dont think spanking us for the elders poor choices is effective in any way shape or form.

I also dont think sitting on senate or the house deserves 174 grand a year. Yeah those men who sit on their ass an argue all day long get paid 174000 yearly, The house,,, gets 193 thousand yearly?

Sure am I naive and young and such Sure am... But i still think thats an obscene amount of money for services not rendered.

Cut those salaries, And start making people pay back what they owe that will keep social security going for some time. But its never going to happen.

If you took that as a swipe at you, it wasn't, it was a swipe at the entire idea of raising the age people can collect what they pay in...

You know, when Social Security was started it was implemented for a few reasons. One of which was that there were many elderly people that could not even afford food, other people lost all their money during the depression, and the last reason was because if older people retired then they could free up jobs for younger able-bodied people....

Social Security would not be in trouble but for the asshole politicians that have exploited it. Why should our retirement be raided by politicians (both sides of the aisle). They want to destroy Social Security, one of the most successful programs of all time....why? Because they want to privatize it for their cronies...

Especially, given the current economy, unless they have a better "system" to replace it.

no one in you're family will get the money you put in?
With the divorce rate so high, they will save a lot of money!
Most people don't have minor children once they hit 60 or 65!!

I was orphaned under Reagan. They cut benefits to widows and orphans so far back it would boggle your mind. My mom would not remarry because she was determined that she would collect my father's social security because he never saw a dime of it. She was a stay-at-home mother for 13 years... she deserved to collect it.

Life expectancy has increased by about 30 years since the advent of the pension over here, with the financial crisis deficits going round, many nations are raising the age requirement, generally by about 5 years. It's been 65 over here for ages, going up to 68 officially....unofficially, it's likely to eventually (by 2040ish) hit 70.

It seems fairly reasonable to me, people are living much longer...raise the age or hike taxes, or both...can't have your cake and eat it.

Thank you for sharing julia, so many people are not aware of what is cut, and who it affects.
You're mother deserved to get social security, and so did the children!
It is unfathomable that things in this country are so dire, they want to raise the age for people to get social security.

I think only about 20% of all adults will get a pension.
Many people are not physically able to work until they are 67!

Boomsday is a book on just this very issue. Its about a blogger who started a whole revolution among the under 30 set to stop paying into Social Security. The attempt was made to make give financially well off baby boomers incentives to kill themselves at age 70.

Its a hoot, and a great read, as far as political satires go. But this thread made me think of it.

You and everyone here has made some excellent points.
I am not sure how to identify or end fraud and abuse in the "system",
but I know that raising the age to almost 70 for those that have contributed
most of their lives is not fair.

Also, life expectancy is relative, many, many people will NOT live to be 70 or 75, and
of the ones that do live that long, many people are in declining health by the age of 70.
Many people will have some sort of chronic illness or disability before the age of 68-70.

Seriously, how many people have the types of professions in which they can work until 70?
I have a very demanding job, and if I can hang in here until 62 or so, I want a gold medal.
Social security may not be a lot of money, and it may not mean much to some people, but I
want my social security, and I don't want to have one foot in the grave when I get it.

You cannot serious.. My father never got a fucking DIME of that money... my mom worked her ass off her entire life for everything she got. She had to wait until she was retired to get any of that money as it was.
