Can't say that I did, but until I do, not much point in commenting on anything that might be taken out of context.

Due to the lack of medical intervention and antibiotics in those days, the sort of lashing you talk about with such enthusiasm often lead to death. The convicts transported on theses ships were kept in worse conditions than the animals that travelled with them - sad considering that alot of them were no more than children, being transported for minor crimes, such as stealing a loaf of bread in the hope of feeding their starving family.  It generally took about 9 months of living in horrific conditions to reach the colonies, those that had survived the journey were staring death in the face everyday, through lack of food and infection.  As this programme was based on fact, I personally find your comment a little insensitive.

Not a comment to bring a smile, but I felt the need to write it - I apologise if my words offend.

Givemy, the truth is rarely ever all that pretty to look at, especially when it is the truth about the past.  We, as a race, enjoy glossing over atrocities to make them more palatible to digest later down the road.

Not offensive, just irrelevant...what exactly does any of that have to do with what the OP stated? Is it of any concievable importance or relevance to the OP commenting on a "hot" scene in a movie that many people died in the convict ships, from neglect, diease, or outright mistreatment?
I think not....however...for what its worth you are 100% correct, if you are interested in the subject at all I recommend the book The Fatal Shore by Robert Hughes

I find it relevant, actually. Many people enjoy romanticizing the trials of non-consenting persons, and, personally, I find it a tad disgusting.

After all, if we wanted to bring to light all those fun activities they forced on people during the Inquisition, wouldn't it be equally appropriate to point out that most people were shoved on those saw horses or strung up by their toes because they were non-Catholic, and that they were tortured to death, not orgasming from sadomasochistic delight?

Arpig -> RE: the incredible journey of mary bryant (4/20/2006 12:07:59 AM)

Actually, if somebody were enjoying a fantasy, or a story or film that had an "Inquisition" scene, I really see no reason whatsoever to bother bringing up all the things you suggested as being relevant....its a fantasy, it isn't real...and before you say "it was real for the people back then"...yup it was, but guess what...they are long gone and as much as they may have mattered back then, they don't anymore. Sympathy wears a little thin after a few centuries...sorry.

And more to the point, none of what really happened makes any difference to a person's enjoyment of a well told tale, so lighten up and enjoy the show.

yeah arpig well said all it was a pure fantasy , not as if i was keeping the women children in those terrible conditiond 300years ago,  if i were i could understand youre concerns ,it was the programme i was intrested made by paid actors,  and im sure we could all think of terrible things that have happened in the world in the last few years or so , but im sure we got better things to talk about , rather than moaning
