I am so sick of being tethered to the pc, I wanna be able to lay in bed or go outside, or not have a huge bulky computer dominating my only bedroom table space.

We have a laptop, but it looks like the screen is on its last legs. I asked a technician at a repair shop how much it'd be to fix a flickering fading an then going completely black screen and he said 400.

Anyway that's not the point.

The point is I am going to be saving my monies, to buy me a lap top. I don't want to spend any more than 1 k, maybe 2k, but I want a nice one. Fast, capable of multi tasking, huge storage capacities, big enough to enjoy things like gaming  and watching movies on, but not so big it's a pain in the ass heavy to hold and use, and doesn't out put to much heat* ours it's like a mini little oven when it runs for more than 20 mins* and it's gotta have a great battery life, not some shitty battery that dies in one hour.

And I'd love it if it had a great photo program or something, since I am forever and always taking pictures and tinkering with editing them and fixing the brightness or the contrast if it came out to dark or something.

Special affects would be cool too.

A built in webcam might be nice.

And of course most importantly it needs to do wifi, since there'd be no point of a lap top, for my needs if it couldn't do wifi easily.

Personally, battery life and lack thereof, is the laptops biggest draw back.

I would love love LOVE to have one of these http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ but my savings account is 100% designated for other, more important, things. Like winter heat, hay, getting a dog spayed, tires for the truck......stuff like that.

I have the 17" pro and absolutely love it. I'm still on the original battery (a little over two years old now) and up until about two months ago I was able to easily get at least ten hours out of it and it would recharge fully in about two. Now I get about four hours out of the battery and it takes a full 24 hours to fully recharge. Other than that, I absolutely love this laptop. Not a single complaint at all.

Someone I know just got one of these. I want one.

But since you want a cheap one I'd say get an ASUS, they are affordable, high quality, they manufacture all the components of their hardware themselves, and I've never heard a geek say anything bad about them.

The only laptop I admire is the one I am trying to learn, a 13'' Macbook pro, I made the jump from pc at last, although I still have a pc, but am finding it very limited compared to the Mac, I mean everything works, no faffing around, it just works. Honestly, my SE P900 sync'd to it with ease, the first computer I have ever had that will do that, and by bluetooth too, my ancient JVC mini DV camera uploaded a video to it with ease, and I- movie I am finding is excellent for editing work and that via firewire, the first comp I have ever had with firewire, my pc needed all sorts of crap to buy before I could edit DV on it, so I gave up with it. Everything just works.

But the relearning process, pc to mac, well besides the excellent tutorials on apple.com, I am finding using a pc keyboard and mouse very helpful, in fact what you can do on pc seems to work more or less on Mac too.

I am in the same position, Aneirin, having just converted to a Macbook Pro after 20-odd years of using PCs. I like mine too-- it's so reassuring to know that it's not likely to pick up viruses or be prone to other mysterious meltdowns. And the keyboard lights up in the dark!

But it puzzles me in some respects. What is up with this freaking trackpad?? I too am just making do with a PC mouse, but I suspect I am missing out on convenient or interesting functions.

My brother (another convert) recommends a book by David Pogue on switching from PC to Mac in his "Missing Manuals" series. I'm hoping that will help when it arrives.

Anyway, if you can afford it, OP, a Macbook seems to be an excellent way to go. I recommend that you stay far, far away from Dell. (see: mysterious meltdowns, above)

Yeah, that trackpad is weird, the things one can do purely by moving a few fingers in odd directions on the pad, I forget that until I do it by accident and think wow, that's novel. Me, I am scared to touch my macbook at the moment, as it is just so nice, but before college, I am going to have to get a crystal case for it and silicon screen and keyboard panel skin, as this thing will be used in a oily workshop and I will be gutted if I mess it up, I need to protect it !

Oh, and my macbook has  anti virus software,  something called Virusbarrier X6, as contrary to popular oppinion, Macs can get viruses, something which might become more common seeing as the Vista disaster has made a fair few people make the switch.

But regards the trackpad, watch this explanation of it
