I was wondering if playing a sort of aristocrat's servant might appeal to any of you. I have harboured a fantasy of having a team of powdered wig-wearing, make-up-enhanced man-servants with impeccable manners and posture. Just wondering...

The Laura Antonieau (however it's spelt) Marketplace series deals with that style of slavery, many like victorian sort of households, and just everybody likes The Remains of the Day and Gosford Park, don't they?

That's the sort of thing, yes!

Gosford Park is on my list, but The Remains of the Day is fabulous, despite the frustrating ending. I'm thinking a little earlier than that though. But thanks for the Antoniou lead!

I thought you meant YOU playing an aristo servant, to which I thought, "Yes, the idea of a slave who was smarter or more refined than I am is extremely appealing".

It depends on whether you're role-playing or simply running a historically influenced household. Many employ those elements and some have created a lifestyle around the formal positions, etiquette, and daily living of the period referenced. I've always felt that a slave was their owner's valet and prefer a structured environment with corresponding stations.

I would just like to play it one day, I may like it so much that I'd aspire to creating a household... but I'm probably far too reclusive for that. As Greta Garbo said, 'I want to be alone'. Plus I'm doubtful that I could ever find people with such dedication for it, I don't trust easily unfortunately.

Well, The Marketplace is set in modern times and the two English movies are set in the 20s to the 40s.

But hey, same thing without the powdered wig, n'est ce pas?

I love my alone time as well but I wouldn't forsake a lady in waiting either.
