defiantbadgirl -> sudden problem recording movies (8/9/2010 5:17:25 PM)

I have Direct TV and have successfully recorded movies from my dvr to blank disks using my dvd recorder for about a year. For the past few weeks I've been unable to do this. Every time I hit record a message comes up saying recording error. Can not record on this disk. First I checked the disks thinking Sir accidentally bought the DVD+R instead of the DVD-R that my recorder takes. He bought he right ones so that isn't the problem. This happens with movies recorded from all channels, not just premium movie channels. I'm beginning to wonder if Direct TV did something to the channels so they can only be recorded on their DVR's and not dvd's. If they did I doubt they would admit it because they would certainly lose me as a customer. Has anyone else with Direct TV had this problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just did a quickie trip through GoogleLand and didn't see anyone one else having this same problem, so I'm making an assumption that, perhaps, something has recently gone wrong in your setup.

First step... (and please don't get upset with this for as common as it seems to be, it's one of the most overlooked areas of troubleshooting by users)... are all of the necessary cables plugged in where they should be? Sometimes normal dusting can dislodge or break a cable.

Next... try replacing cables with known good ones, even if it means having to find a friend to exchange cables with or going out yourself and purchasing new ones.

Next... make sure any programming of the Direct TV receiver or DVD recorder is set correctly. A power outage or imperceptible surge can sometimes put a glitch into programming. You may even want to reset the programming on the devices and reprogram. (OK, I know no one that actually wants to reprogram these things but, from personal experience, I have found that reseting then reprogramming clears up many irksome troubles.)

Just a few things to check that crossed my mind.
