I second both the Outlander Series and the Stephanie Plum series.

I keep hearing that the John Carter of Mars series is being made into a movie. So far the Scy Fy channel had one that was just awlful.

I think they are making a movie from the Stephanie Plum series.

Otherland by Tad Williams. It might be better as a series, to have time to better develop the characters and show all the plot nuances (it's one book split into four parts because it's waaaay too long to not publish sequentially)...but it's awesome. Engaging scifi without being cheesy, neato technology, heavy sociopolitical overtones, a believable serial killer, and a minimum of romance.

Frontera by Lewis Shiner, Zeitgeist by Bruce Sterling, anything by Steve Aylett, Think Inc by Adam Diment, the other Quiller books besides the Berlin Memorandum by Adam Hall, The Man Who Was Tuesday by GK Chesterton, The Glamour by Christopher Priest...
