If you read stories about Edwardian or Victorian England you will hear about "the cut direct". It is when you turn your back and/or shoulder to someone to cut them out of your conversation. If someone is over-monopolizing you, and you don't want to talk to them, why not just give them the cut direct? They are the ones being rude, not you.
Maybe I'm a bad submissive, but I see no reason why I have to continue talking with someone who I have no interest in talking to. To me it is much wiser to leave the conversation. Turning to the person you would like to talk with and starting a conversation with them, while ignoring the other person's comments, would seem like a good way to accomplish 2 goals at one time.
