"Some of the things said about me are true and some are untrue. I do not, however, deny that I planned that sabotage. I did not plan it in a spirit of recklessness, nor because I have any love of violence. I planned it as a result of a calm and sober assessment of the political situation that had arisen after many years of tyranny, exploitation, and oppression of my people by the Whites." -Osama bin Laden, summer 2005

~Nelson Mandela, 20th April 1964.

So by the end of this sentence you've probably noticed, and the answer is both of them. Your perception of the quote (quotes?) will likely have varied depending which name you saw first...and again when you saw the second.....although, you don't think so now...but you do agree that it will have affected other people. Either way, it illustrates my first point about anonymity well enough: prejudice. Prejudice isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just means what it says...pre judge. When ya see a car fly up the pavement you prejudge that it'll hurt when it hits ya. We on this board prejudge stuff all the time. An 'article' from the dailymail or fox is completely untrue. A thread by Brain is mindless pro-democrat/anti-republican propaganda, a thread by Sanity is mindless pro-republican/anti-democrat propaganda, a thread by pahunkboy is mindless. And it's a pretty good guide....that car isn't likely to be made from marshmallow afterall. But it's not always true, and it effects everything anyone ever says....peoples perception of a comment varies depending upon its source, and it shouldn't. A statement should stand or fall on its own merit, not on whether it comes from the mouth of mandela or mandelson.

My second point is self censorship, people don't truly speak their minds, most of the time...out of worry what others'll think of them....whether you think you premodify what you say or not, you do....even for an online persona that's nothing more than a tag linking your comment to all your previous and upcoming comments. The polling gap between professional face to face polling and professional anonymously taken polls is noticable....on pretty much every topic, not just controversial ones. From fear of legal reprisals to worrying that random internet people won't like you so much, it's much the same point.

The merits of anonymity in political debate have long and repeatedly been described far more eloquently, but those are the two main points IMO. So my question is...and despite this being a poll, I do reckon I've got it in the right forum....If there were an option to post a post anonymously.....ignoring technical aspects such as moderation, and the way it doesn't actually stand any chance of being implemented......in theory, if the option existed, would you use it?

Pic unrelated

Jeffff -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 1:54:05 PM)

I would not.

I like the fact that I have to own what I type. When I have been wrong I have acknowledged it.

juliaoceania -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 1:56:57 PM)

Too bad you made this thread into a poll, because it will be moved to the random stupidity section

DCWoody -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 1:59:01 PM)

Meh, if they don't want any polls no matter how on topic in this suboard they shouldn't have the 'new poll' button here.

Musicmystery -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 1:59:40 PM)

I've always thought that too.

domiguy -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:00:44 PM)

My God, can you imagine the crap that people woud post if there was no way to ever drag them on to the carpet?

I am just stating what will happen, at least it always turns out that way from what I have seen.. there is a first time for everything though

hlen5 -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:06:25 PM)

If I could post anonymously, would I? I don't think so. I believe you should be able to stand for your convictions.
The post count and join dates under an avatar are useful to me, because I factor that in along with the opinion being expressed. If person A comes on to cm and then constantly changes their profile, it tells you something about them and their integrity (I'm not talking about people who have technical issues for changing profiles).

DCWoody -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:06:39 PM)

Ya I know :)

@Domig, in my imagined theoretical system moderation would remain just the same as it is now....and there are many forums with anonymous posting, those dedicated to politics have, if anything, significantly higher standards of debate IMO. Have ya noticed the crap posted here already? I figure it's the reduced self-censorship encouraging  mass abuse of the stupider/trolling posts...making them much rarer....although good moderation also does it in many cases.

poise -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:06:51 PM)

I would prefer my voice to be heard as opposed to being some unknown singer.
Painting ones first impression of another with a brand new brush is never easy, but I cant spend my days
attempting to look better in anyone elses eyes but my own, and so far I really like me. " I is who I is".
It is more important for me and my growth to speak/type my thoughts regardless of how others perceive me.
As Jeff said, its taking ownership of one's thoughts, whether they are popular or not.

laurell3 -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:10:33 PM)

No, the forums aren't any different from real life. If you consistently behave in a manner that is irrational, it is not a "prejudice" for people to assume you will behave in that manner again, it is merely a presumption. Presumptions are refutable. Reputations are changable over time. I do want to know the source of stated opinions both here and in life as it gives you necessary information on which to consider their validity and is also a good indicator of how much time I should waste attempting to explain my points. There are SO many people in P&R that are just wasted time in my opinion.

Uh...for many of them the same absolute crap they post now?

It may tell you something about that person, but surely it shouldn't affect the validity or not of their comments?

juliaoceania -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:18:52 PM)

The fact of the matter is we can post anonymously here... we can make a sock puppet and no one knows who we are, unless a mod wants to track our ISP... even then we could be in a large city and get away with it if we wanted.. or have multiple ISP accounts.

The internet is anonymous in many ways still

LaTigresse -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:22:02 PM)

When I am posting something really obnoxious, by god I want people to know that LaT aka LeeAnn, posted it! Dammit!!![:D]

Jeffff -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:23:26 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhh........ you're good!

pahunkboy -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 2:46:43 PM)

I dont know what you mean.   A screen name is sort of anonymous.    If you truly want to use your name post on facebook.  Do it.

LaTigresse -> RE: Anonymity (8/10/2010 3:06:19 PM)

I do....... my family quite often does not know what to think of me.[:D]
