Robert Byrd and Ted Stevens are no more. They came from a different age, when you got bills passed - you cut the backroom deals and loaded them with pork, and sent them to get signed by the President.

It's a different game now. It's Party Uber Alles. Pelosi spent her last two years opposing the Bush agenda because it was better for her party than to work with the GOP. The GOP is now returning the favor.

Opposition politics is everywhere. Obama's lack of a record was a positive because there were fewer votes to dredge up from his past and publicize. Same with Kagan. Almost every single Republican voted against Kagan, even though it made no difference. Three decades ago, almost nobody would have opposed a nomination that was a foregone conclusion.

It's good to see that pork politics is not allowed as much as before. But the era of hyperpartisanship is a heavy price to pay.

I don't see things improving. I see each party railing against the other to frighten constituents into making contributions TO THE PARTY. And elected officials will owe allegiance to the party, over constituents, over country.

I see gridlock if either party gets a significant enough minority to filibuster.

Steven, yes I think it really is time to get some Independants in office!
All of our problems have been caused by,.....Democrats and Republicans! And as long as they're screaming at each other how can we have more moderate views?
Each "side" has to "give up" a few things to compromise. A little quid pro quo.

For example on the left they could "give up" all talk of amnesties for illegals and open borders that just pisses most people off anyway. Just enforce the law, that's what people want.
On the right they could "give up" their aversion to Gay Marriage and the Abortion nonsense. What do they care what someone does in the privacy of their own bedroom anyway? Who are they bothering? And abortion is noone else's business but the immediate parties involved. Stop trying to regulate people's lives and just tell the holy rollers on the right to STFU! They speak "only" for themselves!
Get rid of those polorizing issues and maybe they could get some business done. Just say, "we're not going to talk about or debate those issues anymore so let's move on."
They have to learn the art of compromise.

Steven, I know you harken back to the good ole days. But are you seriously telling me it was different? How. That you didn't know all the inner workings of the system? Information is bad? I don't think so at all. We are in the midst of a pretty large struggle for the hearts and minds and future of this nation. If we step back to the old days we are done. finis, adios,......we have to change and change now. Massaging things so that no one is upset won't do anyone any good.
