Republicans want to use Rangel to help them to win more seats in November so it’s in their interest to drag this out for as long as possible.

Republicans have already been making Rangel a campaign issue, and a fall trial would give them expanded opportunities. It can't start until September, because Congress takes August off.
Soon after the charges were revealed, the National Republican Senatorial Committee warmed up its campaign message, issuing news releases in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Louisiana and Florida. The statements asked why Democratic Senate candidates in those states haven't yet returned money Rangel raised for them.

House Democrats, armed with a thick docket of Republican ethics cases, are putting the GOP leadership on notice: Throw mud at them and they’ll pitch rocks at a Republican glass house.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Thursday plans to issue a list of 17 Republican House members, including top leaders, who have faced ethics issues in the past as a way to divert attention from the current ethics issues facing Democratic members like Rep. Charles Rangel and newly retired Rep. Eric Massa.
In its release, the DCCC will raise two big names in GOP ethics cases: Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay and lobbyist Jack Abramoff. And sources tell Whispers that they are ready to return fire against Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele if he pushes Democratic ethics issues.
“We’re fighting back,” says a DCCC spokesman. “We’re going on offense on ethics.”
What’s more, look for the Democrats to slap down Republicans who adopt Massa, who quit amid sexual harassment allegations but who has suggested that party leaders forced him out because he wasn’t keen on voting for the leadership’s healthcare reform plan.

The Republican culture of corruption under Tom DeLay and Republican leadership had devastating consequences that the American people are still paying the price for: a complex and costly prescription drug bill written by drug companies, an energy policy written by the Big Oil companies, and --------record deficits to pay for tax breaks for their most wealthy friends. That’s why it’s not surprising to see disgraced former Republican Congressman Richard Pombo—who embodied the Republicans’ culture of corruption—win the endorsement of NRCC Recruitment Chair Kevin McCarthy.
