Ms. Bitch don't listen to anyone else about cars, I couldn't even read past the first couple of reponses. If the shifter is moving but you do not feel the detents you most likely have a broken shifter cable, or some other piece of linkage.
Listen up, you need a new tranny when it DOES go into gear but slips, clunks very loudly and or does some really funky other shit. At the VERY VERY worst You have a stuck parking pawl, and it broke the linkage. That might require getting into the tranny, but I would say on at least 95% of cars on the road it can be fixed without removing it from the car, by accessing it through the pan.
You might not like what I have to say next, if you don't have a personal mechanic, get a guy to handle it. They have a tendency to rake Women over the coals more. If you've seen a neighbor working on his car in the driveway you re better off talking to him about it than calling a shop, unless you know them already.
Take it from me, this might make a two grand difference in your life. I am at least third generation car people. I have repaired (sorta, made it work) valve bodies in trannies, I did a top end on an engine and it ran so good the emissions test read zero on everything but CO2 (it is impossible to read zero on CO2). My family and I have repaired the unrepairable, and built cars with so much power they busted the front seat right out of the floor. In fact alot of our hotrod type (sleeper) cars needed a 2 by 4 to hold up the back of the driver's seat. We would replace the seat but the new one would just break anyway.
In short, it is VERY unlikely that you need a new tranny. That is unless you take the word the 'other' way, if ya know whaddI mean.
If you didn't live so far away I would consider sending one of my guys over and you might be looking at about a hundred bucks.
