BossyShoeBitch -> car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/12/2010 7:31:59 PM)

Looking for some opinions.

When I try to shift my car out of park, the gear shift moves but with no resistance and doesn't catch on whatever it's supposed to catch on to make it shift into reverse, neutral, drive, etc.. (automatic transmission).

Of course I am thinking the worst, that I am going to need to replace the transmission.  Someone please tell me I'm wrong!!

No, I don't believe you are wrong.  (Dommes are never supposed to be wrong anyway.)  I don't work on cars, but I used to work for a dealership.

I don't suppose you have a valid warranty.

Jeff

It's a 2003.  Way out of warranty.

SHIT!!

flcouple2009 -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/12/2010 8:23:59 PM)

Sorry, that;s not good news for the transmission.  Ask around to your friends and look for a reputable place you feel comfortable with and have it towed there.

I can suggest this.  If your comfortable with something like it, there is a used parts place here who have been at their present location since the early 70's.  They can also do the actual repair as well.  Their reputation for good used parts and service is well known.  I would actually trust them before a lot of shops and even dealers.

If you could find something similar on your side of the state it would be the least painful to you.  The down side is your probably looking at a 30 to maybe 60 day warranty on the part.  That's the trade off in price, it is covered long enough to make sure it is working.

stef -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/12/2010 8:26:36 PM)

What kind of car is it?

It might just be a problem with the shift linkage, the coupler between the lever and the transmission. Transmissions generally don't just stop working without warning, but when they do, it's spectacular and you know it's dead.

sappatoti -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/12/2010 8:27:56 PM)

It may not be the transmission but something within the gearshift lever or mechanism itself.

I had a similar problem with my car (a manual transmission though) where the shift lever moved a bit too freely. The mechanic replaced two short pieces of cables which tied the lever to the transmission, and all was working again.

That's not to say you only need cables, for your car may not use them. But from what you describe, it sounds like something is disconnected between your shift lever and transmission.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/12/2010 9:44:25 PM)

How many miles on the car? Ever had any transmission work done? Have you kept up with the recommended fluid changes?

Every have any sort of transmission problems prior to this, especially recently? Anything about the shift lever that didn't feel right, or the transmission not shifting smoothly from one gear to another, or anything like that? Any noises?

Have you checked the transmission fluid? How did it look? Any sign of metal in the fluid?

Will you go out with me? OK, OK, that's got nothing to do with the transmission, but I figured as long as I had you answering questions, I might as well try to slip that one past you.

Seriously, though, the other questions could be useful. Stef's got a good point. Tranny's don't usually die all at once. They usually send out a few distress signals as they're losing consciousness.

On the transmission where the cable from your shifter attaches is a bolt type deal. The attachment has probably slid off it. Get someone to either shift it while you look under the car or shift while someone looks under the car. Easy to see then. Just reattach it and tighten,.

edited to add, you'll probably have to play with the shifter a bit when you reattach. By that I mean, you probably can't put the shifter in park. Got to find the gear it's actually in if that makes sense.

Just sending thoughts that it all works out, BSB

DomKen -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/13/2010 12:19:41 AM)

It certainly sounds more like a shift linkage problem than an actual transmission problem. Especially if it suddenly happened with no warning of any kind.

Most likely the cable has slipped off due to a broken retaining pin. Get down and dirty on the drivers side and take a look. If so, a few bucks for a new pin and get it back on. Clean the unit while you are there and make sure the fluid levels are ok (the transmission's, not yours).

If you heard a snap/ping/twang and you don't have a bung knee or a body in the trunk then it's probably a snapped cable. Dirt can get in there and shred away at it until breaks. New cable - 60 bucks and up.

That's my attempt to be a man for the day. I now go hunt meat.

I work on cars for a living and am actually a transmission specialist.

What is the year make and model?

It could be a broken shift cable, way less expensive than a new trans.

If the cable is broken do not go crawling around under the car unless the parking brake works and is securely engaged, or someone is in the drivers seat with foot on brake. Messed up cable, park may not be working.

Feel free to message me with any questions.

And yeah, ditto on the brakes.

I sense a happy ending!

Ja, looks to me like somebody is going to owe somebody else a bitchy bossing around whilst in her shoes.

samboct -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/13/2010 5:42:47 AM)

An additional point-

While I agree with Stef et al that the likely problem is a cable from your description- if the tranny IS shot, be very careful about replacing it. The upshot of it is that its very hard to get a tranny as well done as what came OEM with the car, and that includes the factory. Basically, they don't keep whole tranny's lying around for 7 years, they rebuild them. The people who do the rebuilding rarely use the same materials as the OEMs - at least this was the case about 15 years ago, and I doubt it's changed. So if you replace the tranny, don't plan on the new one lasting as long as the original. In short, you probably have a different set of wheels in your future if this is the case.

But the likely issue is the cable....

Cheers,

Sam

BSB I hope it isn't anything major - transmissions can be so damn expensive to replace blah

sighs....I am so immature, I am laughing at the most macabre image of a hundred transexuals writhing on the ground sending out distress signals [:D]

Termyn8or -> RE: car transmission problems...SHIT! (8/14/2010 6:28:58 AM)

Ms. Bitch don't listen to anyone else about cars, I couldn't even read past the first couple of reponses. If the shifter is moving but you do not feel the detents you most likely have a broken shifter cable, or some other piece of linkage.

Listen up, you need a new tranny when it DOES go into gear but slips, clunks very loudly and or does some really funky other shit. At the VERY VERY worst You have a stuck parking pawl, and it broke the linkage. That might require getting into the tranny, but I would say on at least 95% of cars on the road it can be fixed without removing it from the car, by accessing it through the pan.

You might not like what I have to say next, if you don't have a personal mechanic, get a guy to handle it. They have a tendency to rake Women over the coals more. If you've seen a neighbor working on his car in the driveway you re better off talking to him about it than calling a shop, unless you know them already.

Take it from me, this might make a two grand difference in your life. I am at least third generation car people. I have repaired (sorta, made it work) valve bodies in trannies, I did a top end on an engine and it ran so good the emissions test read zero on everything but CO2 (it is impossible to read zero on CO2). My family and I have repaired the unrepairable, and built cars with so much power they busted the front seat right out of the floor. In fact alot of our hotrod type (sleeper) cars needed a 2 by 4 to hold up the back of the driver's seat. We would replace the seat but the new one would just break anyway.

In short, it is VERY unlikely that you need a new tranny. That is unless you take the word the 'other' way, if ya know whaddI mean.

If you didn't live so far away I would consider sending one of my guys over and you might be looking at about a hundred bucks.

Not a Volvo is it ?

My only one experience of an auto transmission and it was on a Volvo, I had that linkage apart hoping it was something other than a known design fault particular to a certain year's V40, it turned out to be the design fault, but was repairable and someone else paid for it, it wasn't my car.

But, it's manual gearboxes ( stick shifts in the US ?) for  me now, I know where I stand with those things, it often ends up being the clutch if problems are suspected with the transmission.
