I heard it in context.... I listened to the entire thing. She can apologize all she wants, but the energy with which she went after that caller, intentionally saying the N word over and over even after she knew her caller was hurt by it, this makes her an ugly pig fuck. These are the things that make me strongly despise her show. I cannot stand emotionally sadistic people who get off on being cruel and hurtful

BoiJen -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 10:50:06 AM)

I agree StrangerThan.

I hate Dr. Laura. Rude bitch from go and I simply have never listened to her part "Hi, I'm doctor Laura...".

However, the sentiment expressed is one I understand.

If a white person can't use the same word as a black person, because of the color of their skin, then that's as racist as a person not being able to a water fountain or bathroom because of the color of their skin. It's thought control.

There's three schools of thought around this that I've seen and experienced as a white person, living in and around black communities almost all of my life.
  1.  It's never ok to use the word"nigger" as a word because it's been used as a slur.
  2.  It's ok to use the word "nigger" but only if you're black.
  3.  It's ok use the word "nigger" because using the word freely and socially without hate takes the hateful power of the word as a slur away.
To me, it's an either or thing. 2 is the racist slant.

As far as "what do blacks think about this?"...well, I've found myself asking Ma'am what's the typical Jewish view on x political position? To which her response is often "Well, that depends on if you're coming from a background of Orthodox or Reform or...." and then she explains things to me. Which I find interesting. Asking "what do blacks think about x" is asking for insight into a culture that is based on race. Cultures and communities based on race exist all over the world. Such a question is pretty legitimate if you're looking for cultural insight.

Hmmmm.... what if I asked you "what do whites think about that?" would you feel qualified to answer for your entire race? I don't.

And your point would be?

THELADY -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 11:05:01 AM)

I don't think it was raciest. she was repeating what is heard on other channels. she was how ever rude and never let the gal finish what she was saying and she never addressed the gals problems she just assume what the problem was. very rude.

flcouple2009 -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 11:25:10 AM)

I am in agreement with others,  she is just a nasty cunt.

The real question is why did she feel the need to go on like this at the person.  Wouldn't the real question be why the idiot husband even have friends who would speak about his wife like this much less let them in the house.

My late grandmother taught me the origins of the word, which is a derivation of the Latin/Italian/French/Spanish words for the color "black" .  She also taught me the hateful way it is used, and the why's and wherefores of that hatefulness. I am now in my 50's and I despise the word, as I have too many bigoted relatives that throw the word around like it was nothing.   Do I wish Chris Rock, or other black comedians would not use it?  Yes, but I also understand why they use it.  I grew up in the era of : "I am black and I am proud, say it strong say it loud" yet even in this era I am uncomfortable referring to a person by melanin content.  Maybe I suffer from "white guilt" or maybe just maybe, I am what the future will be.  I hope it is the latter, since we as a species will never advance if we don't learn to first to look at one another as "human" first

--  I think what she did was a blunder.

The radio audience pays her salary- so- if she did a disservice the market will put her out.

At one time- I liked her.  But she did get overly pushy- and not too long ago- she went off on gay people.  I do not recall the context.

While- one could argue that blacks use that term- etc-   her use was not wise- as the people pay her check.

So let the market decide.

She is not one of my gurus- and I dare say- that her outburst - makes ya want to change the channel- to - say Alex.  LOL.

on the other hand- it could be a shock jock stunt to boost ratings.

Either way-  I think her saying that on a radio show was- not something the market will fund.

Don't hold back now, tell us how you really feel.

Now I am glad I decided to read the comments before actually clicking on the link and hearing her. Thanks to you and all the others who joined in to give their opinions on the clip.

Oh and YBD, I had a friend a while back, who not only felt the need to tell people he was black in the first 10 minutes of a conversation, but he also let him know he was gay. I don't know, maybe in case they were blind and deaf and hadn't mentioned it. But he was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around, so we ignored it.

juliaoceania -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 1:16:48 PM)

Oh, you should listen to it... it isn't entertaining to me, but it is instructive as to why I decided she was not allowed to be played in my presence about 15 years ago. Some things nauseate me.

As a simple way of asking the question if it was another talk show host.....would they still be on the air?

Should we ask Don Imus? (And yes he DESERVED to get his ass kicked off the air).

*agrees with julia, but can't bring myself to listen because it will piss me right the fuck off*
Dr. Laura is an elitist hosebag. She should kept as Rush Limbaugh's ball-gagged dirt-floor-cellar house bitch along with that other waste-of-pussy Sarah Impalin.

I cannot tell other people how to think or feel, but I was raised in all colorblindness and firmly do not allow racism and prejudice in my home.
If it's presented as comedy, I take it with a grain of salt and let it wash down my back and off. Whatever.
If it's presented in any other media context, I use my X button or go listen to someone else.
If it's spoken by a person in my home, they are asked to refrain or leave, and they are not generally welcomed back. If it's a child in ignorance having heard it somewhere, it is explained to the child why enlightened human civility demands that we don't do that - however, one of my teenage sons, after a period of hanging out with a lot of black kids in HS, thought it was ok to come home using the N word. He knew better and thought he was being cute. I disavowed him of this with one backhand. It stopped. [8|]

hlen5 -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 1:38:53 PM)

I just read the mediamatters transcript. She is on the air (I think unjustifiably) because her sensationalism pays and gets an audience.

Contrast her snarky, rude behavior with a real radio host like Diane Rheam(sp). Just consider "Dr." Laura an audio Jerry Springer.

My son had all sorts of inter-ethnic close friendships, he and all of his friends would call each other racial slurs and laugh, he tried to explain to me they were attempting to take the power to hurt from those terms, but I told him the world does not work like that. He stopped doing it in my presence... He is an adult now and he does not do it at all anymore... His black friends would call him things like "crackerjack" etc... and they encouraged him to call them the N word, and they would call him the N word, etc etc etc... he thought this showed they truly accepted him and he was "proud" of it... thank god he got over that.....

Amen, sister.. did yours have the droopy-pants thing going on as well? (Mine had no ass and couldn't half help it, and never would keep track of where his belt was, but half the time I think it was on purpose..)

juliaoceania -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 2:09:55 PM)

No he did not. For younger people it is a hard thing, because he really loves his friends, and he would never say something like that unless invited to, but it does not make it okay. He had to grow up a little to understand that.

pahunkboy -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 2:21:00 PM)

I read the transcript excerpt.

I do not want to hear the tape.

Tantriqu -> RE: Is this Racist speak? (8/13/2010 2:33:23 PM)

People! complaining about racial slurs by using sexist slurs is even worse!
'Cunt' and 'bitch' should be in the same column as n*gger and ki*e; note all are frequently preceded in pejoratives with 'uppity'.
