CHICAGO - Japanese adults can't get enough satisfaction, but Austria's mojo is working.
Sex is more satisfying in countries where women and men are considered equal, according to an international study of people between the ages of 40 and 80 by researchers at the University of Chicago.
Austria topped the list of 29 nations studied with 71 percent of those surveyed reported being satisfied with their sex lives.
Spain, Canada, Belgium and the United States also reported high rates of satisfaction.
The lowest satisfaction rate — 25.7 percent — was reported in Japan.
The study was led by sociologist Edward Laumann, considered a top authority on the sociology of sex, who believes the findings show that relationships based on equality lead to more satisfaction for both genders.
"Male-centered cultures where sexual behavior is more oriented toward procreation tend to discount the importance of sexual pleasure for women," Laumann said.
"When mama's not happy, nobody's happy," he said.
The study appears in the April issue of the Archives of Sexual Behavior. It was funded by Pfizer, which makes the impotence drug Viagra.
Researchers surveyed 27,500 people by phone, in person or by mail, depending on local practices. The difference in questioning methods was one of the study's limitations, the researchers noted.
A nation's level of health and education could contribute to the findings, said John DeLamater, a professor at the University of Wisconsin and editor of the International Journal of Sex Research, who was not involved in the research.
"It's conceivable that people in developed countries have more information about sexuality. And they're also healthier," DeLamater said. "Being better informed, and being in better shape, they may be more able to maintain a satisfying sex life."

Both very good reasons why this study does not apply to our little comunity.

Quote 'Sociology is the science with the greatest number of methods and the least results.'
Henri Poincare
   Science and Method

There could be a whole host of reasons why the results came back as they did. Anyone that speaks two languages knows that posing the same question in two different languages is almost impossible without some change in nuance and if the participants were asked in English then there is another reason for variants.

Sexual satisfaction might be high in the US but rates of divorce are high too and infidelity appears to be around 50-70% so satisfaction with relationships in which one assumes the sex is taking place, is not very high.

Some cultures are more happy to discuss sex and see sex as more important, some see the concentration on sex as part of the me, me, me, gratification culture. While someone might say they aren't sexually satisfied, they may also not see sexual satisfaction as the most important thing in their life.

In societies where women have an equal status to men, it seems pretty obvious to me that women will have more satisfying lives so it seems pretty obvious that sex would be part of that.

Where do they dream these surveys up from, there must be better ways to spend their time.

It seems axiomatic to me that when women are more empowered to control their lives and choose their partner, the more likely it is that they'll find a compatible match, which would arguably mean a better sex life.

Pretty much.  Consensual submission and slavery means we get to choose what type of relationship we want to have- we're not stuck in something unfulfilling.

Personally, I don't think I'd enjoy surrendering control if I didn't have control to surrender.  I certainly struggled with issues of feminism and it took me a lot longer to get here, but if I was in Afghanistan or Iran, I would be large sums of money I would be fighting for the right to wear pink socks and no veil, and wouldn't find any erotic pull about doing in my private life what was done to me on a minute-by-minute basis in every center of my life.  I think, for me at least, it is exciting to explore the shadows, but in very patriarchal societies, that sure wouldn't be a "shadow" area.

Definitely! If you have the freedom to choose you can produce a better sex life for yourself. As I've said many times we are not cut from cookie cutter molds. What works for one person will not work for another. If society would loosen up and realise that sex is a good, nornal, healthy activity (as long as its SSC) the world would be a much happier place.
Equality gives us the balance that we need to live happier, more fulfilled lives IMO. When people are forced into roles it suppresses many of the sexual feelings that they have thereby making them unhappy. If your unhappy in life in general it will effect your sex life, thats a fact.
I truly do feel sorry for the women/men who live in these societies where gender roles/orientations are forced upon them. Many are miserable and you can see it in some of their eyes. The females look depressed and sad, the males look angry and like they are ready to kill someone. It's a shame that in this day and age that one of the few natural things that we can enjoy is viewed upon by many as something dirty, disgusting and even evil.

While Fox may be my slave, he could only consent to being my slave because we began as equals (that part of my ethics and morals not a statement that others need agreee with0. So for me, equality does indeed play a big factor in whether or not I do BDSM at all.

I think having choices overall make for better any type of relationships sexual or otherwise. I don't think we can compare overal sociological studies though to individual relationships -- they aren't the same thing.
