Harper's Latest Step in Building 'Tea Party North'

His census stance is meant to fan populist anger while killing a key tool for social advocacy.
Industry Minister Tony Clement's tweets aside, Stephen Harper's Conservatives know that changing the 2011 long form census from compulsory to voluntary makes it useless for public and private Canadian decision-makers. In fact, that's exactly why they're doing it.

Status: offline 		These things I would have expected them to do if they had a majority government and I just think after so many years in power they have become impatient. Usually Canadian politics is pretty boring but these are some strident radical changes. I expect I expect after many years of minority governments the conservative party should not get reelected for a generation when Canadians find out/realize what these Canadian neocons are all about.

I hope the Canadian people get as angry as it did when I read this.

Status: offline 		Its Iggy's fault, the NDP offered to form a coalition but Iggy didn't want anything to do with being in charge at the time...he wanted Harper to take the heat for the economic crisis, but Canada's decent performance through the crisis has helped Harper and he will likely do better next election. If Iggy wasn't so determined to play politics and so focused on chasing a Grit majority this problem wouldn't exist.

Put the blame where it belongs...squarely in Iggy's lap.

Chances are the people who would voluntarily complete it would be the middle classes, not the people stuck in poverty who would really benefit from being recognised. With out a high completion rate a census will only mask problems and leave vulnerable sectors of society (more) under represented.

Status: offline 		I may be wrong but I think if the Liberals do another coalition with NDP and the Bloc, I think the Gov. Gen. will let them form a government. I think she's learned from past mistakes not to let the Tories/conservatives run the government. Also, most Canadians wanted the Gov. Gen. to continue in her position and the Conservatives decided to replace her. Hopefully, she won't appreciate being rejected for another term.

That's exactly why they're doing it. They know a voluntary census is useless.
