A new superbug that is resistant to even the most powerful antibiotics has entered UK hospitals, experts warn.

They say bacteria that make an enzyme called NDM-1 have travelled back with NHS patients who went abroad to countries like India and Pakistan for treatments such as cosmetic surgery.

NDM-1 can exist inside different bacteria, like E.coli, and it makes them resistant to one of the most powerful groups of antibiotics - carbapenems.

These are generally reserved for use in emergencies and to combat hard-to-treat infections caused by other multi-resistant bacteria.

And experts fear NDM-1 could now jump to other strains of bacteria that are already resistant to many other antibiotics.

Ultimately, this could produce dangerous infections that would spread rapidly from person to person and be almost impossible to treat.

Similar infections have been seen in the US, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands and international researchers say that NDM-1 could become a major global health problem.

Infections have already been passed from patient to patient in UK hospitals.

E., I had seen that.

IMO- no one created the super bug- not this one. It just is.

chilling- tho - part of me wonders if the establishment is afraid of losing $, on medical tourism. - So on that basis the hype might help cut the rush to cheap venues.

I am covered and have no intention of going anywhere for medical tourism.

That said- I have a nasty cold bug right now. Yikes.

I doubt that "cosmetic" surgery is really the important factor in this; if one looks at ads for cosmetic surgery India and Pakistan dont figure highly the last time I looked.

I suspect that it has been reported as such so as not to disclose the rampant misuse of anti-biotics in those countries (which was reported on Channel 4) that has led to this alongside the mass travel between here and there by immigrant populations here, in turn in order not to provide the right with any ammunition about immigrants bringing disease into the country - a mistake that was made a few years back when it emerged that tuberculosis was again on the rise in the UK as a result of those from these countries bringing it in either untreated or worse semi-treated, leading to resistant forms of the disease.

Even so, the rampant misuse of anti-biotics here doesnt help either. The number of people going to the GP with viral infections and not being satisfied at being given anything other than anti-biotics, over decades now, also plays into this problem of resistance.

India is a destination for people in the US to go for heart valves. A $100k surgery here can cost $14k including the travel. They built a whole city to cater to this crowd.

Recall the health insurance is spotty in the US- even when you are covered there are escape clauses.
