ShaharThorne -> I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 4:10:17 AM)

...the schools are coming back!

Not that I loathe it, but I cannot talk to Lizard until after classes.

Oh..and the supplies that have to be collected AFTER she gets her supply lists from each teacher, which is a 2-day span.

There is the tax-free weekend, so I am rather limited on getting supplies because this is the first year that school supplies are on the tax exempet(?) list as well.  I have also limited the Sears account to $150 (mom's card).

Yesterday, Lizard wanted some boots and a plaid pants from Hot Topic...She has to be the perfect emo/gothic chick...

Ah well...I can call her counseler today and get everything straighten out...

DesFIP -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 4:36:57 AM)

My son just announced he feels a need to do back to school shopping as he is out of his skinny jeans phase and needs regular jeans. And new sneakers.

I hate the mall.

MissAsylum -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 4:52:10 AM)

i'm sorry you bought into the skinny jeans fad that went on. i immediately wished my sympathies on parents who bought them thinking, "oh, God, if they only knew that are just throwing money away". anyway, yet another semester of university....registered for classes in may, just now getting a book list which contains over 500 dollars worth of books, 90% of which i probably won't even take out the cellophane when i find out that we won't be using any of the "REQUIRED TEXT". I fucking hate university sometimes.....

Celeste...i despise malls. Lucky for me, i have a plan.

Give the kid one of those pre-paid credit cards, then drive up to the main mall doors and slow the car down a wee bit. Reach over, open the passenger door, annnnnnd SHOVE.

Hopefully that silly "distressed" look will still be in fashion when i have to implement my plan, as i am pretty sure the landing might be a bit rough on the jeans.

Pa is far better on taxes than other states.

Irregardless, the LO goes to a private school run by an awesome teacher who raised 4 kids of her own. As a result, she charges a 10.00  supply fee twice a year for each child and SHE buys the supplies. The only personal item the kids are permitted to have is a backpack.

I freakin love it.

MissAsylum -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 5:17:20 AM)

pre-paid credit card? i wish i had that. i've been buying my own clothes since 13.

LadyPact -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 10:45:14 AM)

I damn near celebrated last summer at the point when it was time for school shopping.  My first time in fifteen years that I didn't have to do it!  I got to avoid all of the craziness looking for certain sizes, certain styles, and certain supplies.  A little bit of extra happy came My way at every commercial that advertised back to school anything.

I feel for ya, cause I know your pain, but it does end one day.

MissA, check out the textbook section of Amazon.com. They have both good condition used and new textbooks for a fraction of the cost at the campus bookstore. My son just enrolled in a paramedic program, starts next week.....his $187 book was $70 NEW on Amazon, the anatomy book AND workbook I got "gently" used.... apparently they dropped the class after the first week, lol.... for about $29, including shipping. Bookstore cost was almost $100 just for the textbook. Ebay is a good source, too, you can save hundreds!

Just make sure you double check your book list and buy the correct editions, since they can change from year to year.

www.half.com is another great source for used books.

MissAsylum -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 11:54:07 AM)

only problem with that- most of the books are special editions made for my school.

otherwise, i'd be damned if i would buy a book full price.

calamitysandra -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 12:08:55 PM)

I am aaaaaaall done with buying back to school supplies already. [sm=banana.gif][sm=banana.gif][sm=banana.gif]

This year was hideous though. For the first time all three kids needed to be bought for. This included Youngest, who will start his first year, and consequently needed everything, as well as Oldest, who moves on from Elementary to Gymnasium, which meant he too needed everything, only cool. Middle One needed only slightly less, returning to school for year two.

LaTigresse -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 12:20:24 PM)

With my kids being 29 and 31, I have long passed the agony of school shopping. BUT, working in a college town I mourn the loss of a peaceful downtown.

Shadow-tiger -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/17/2010 1:02:15 PM)

Every time I think of that back to school time, I think of this. [:D]

ETA: Or this one. Mwahaha!

ShaharThorne -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/18/2010 3:54:16 AM)

I actually went to Staples looking for supplies...they were out but I did get Lizard her calculator.

Got some spirals, she still has map colors, pens and her giant binder.  I think she has a flash drive.  We just to work on the lists since the state governments have sales tax null the weekend before school starts.  That is perfect for clothing and school supplies, but the teachers hands out the lists on first two days of school

Never seen the Alice Copper(?) one.  He is very much a parent who is devoted to his kids education and was part of the groups at school.  Very cool for a man who plays with snakes...LOL!

Shar.....Staples?

Try the Dollar Store!!!!!!!!!

DesFIP -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/18/2010 4:55:31 AM)

Shar, email the teacher asking to get the lists early so you can get the supplies during the no tax days.

And congratulations on finding the calculator. Make sure she doesn't lose it, they're expensive as hell.

exactly. I was just about to offer to post a load from the pound store or the 99p store...

LadyHibiscus -> RE: I hate this time of year... (8/18/2010 6:51:15 AM)

The dollar store is a place of wonders!! I get my office supplies there all the time, and if some of the pens are crappy, no big deal! At ten for a buck, I can pitch them.

The school bus stop is at the foot of my driveway. [8|]
