There is no truly missing dollar; the apparent short-count is a relic of the inaccurate statement that each man paid only nine dollars, for the room suggests it does not account for the removed 'tip', of which they each paid a fraction. A more direct accounting of the sums before the bellboy returns the money reflects this (2+3+25=30, needless to say). Again, each guest has in fact ultimately paid the nine of the ten dollars they were originally parted from (said nine dollars including a third of the two dollar tip (roughly 66 cents each)) So, nine dollars total each for room and five-fingered tip, one dollar back into each of their pockets. No need for coffee on this one I must say erin, even if it weren't an old chestnut. ;) Edited to add to the general audience: Of course in the modern context you'd best be more concerned about your missing possesions and inevitably stolen identity, given you've got a disgruntled bellhop who is an unabashed thief. Tip your bellboy, even if he is shady. Afterall, he's your best bet for finding all the messed up shit you're looking for on vacation. :) Edited several more times to fix typos and ambiguities that made me a look like a dunce. Ok, maybe caffeine might have helped with the relating of the solution anyway.
