mistoferin -> Math Problem (you're gonna need more coffee) (8/17/2010 7:15:57 AM)

There were three weary travellers who decided to pull off the road and find a little motel to get some shut eye. They came upon a little roadside inn and checked in. The cost of the room was $30 dollars which they decided to split amongst themselves, each paying $10. The bellhop helped them take their bags to their room.

When the bellhop returned to the front desk the manager said "Those were some pretty nice guys, I think I'll give them a little break. Here, take this $5 and return it to them."

On the way back to the room the bellhop tried to figure out how to split the $5 between the three guys and couldn't come up with the answer. He decided he'd give each guy back $1 and he'd keep the other $2 as his tip.

So that means that each guy paid $9 for the room. Three times nine is 27. The bellhop kept $2 so that makes $29.

Where is the missing dollar?

30 for the room.

5 dollars off.

25 for the room.

two in his pocket

27 for the room

three back to the men

no money missing.

There is no missing dollar.

The room cost 25 dollars and not 30. If you look at the problem from that perspective it is solvable.

The 3 men contributed 27 dollars total, 25 for the room and 2 for the tip.

There is no truly missing dollar; the apparent short-count is a relic of the inaccurate statement that each man paid only nine dollars, for the room suggests it does not account for the removed 'tip', of which they each paid a fraction.  A more direct accounting of the sums before the bellboy returns the money reflects this (2+3+25=30, needless to say).  Again, each guest has in fact ultimately paid the nine of the ten dollars they were originally parted from (said nine dollars including a third of the two dollar tip (roughly 66 cents each)) So, nine dollars total each for room and five-fingered tip, one dollar back into each of their pockets.  No need for coffee on this one I must say erin, even if it weren't an old chestnut.  ;)

Edited to add to the general audience: Of course in the modern context you'd best be more concerned about your missing possesions and inevitably stolen identity, given you've got a disgruntled bellhop who is an unabashed thief.  Tip your bellboy, even if he is shady.  Afterall, he's your best bet for finding all the messed up shit you're looking for on vacation. :)

Edited several more times to fix  typos and ambiguities that made me a look like a dunce. Ok, maybe caffeine might have helped with the relating of the solution anyway.

Three males in a hotel room?

I might not care about the missing dollar.  I just want to see what kind of action is going on in there.

You tricked me when you said this was a math question. How sneaky.

OK here is a real math conundrum, you multiply 10 x 1.1  you get 11, but if you perform the inverse operation and divide 10 by .9 you get 1.11111111111, why the difference when they are both 10% ???

Mathematically,

When you divide 10 by 0.9 you get 11.1111111111.

And wouldnt the inverse of 1.1 be 1/1.1?

Which is .90909090909090909090909090909090?

Which gives you the result of 11.000000000000000000001... or something extremely close.
