Status: offline 		Jeddie is a flightless bird thanks to the wing injury he came to me with. Someone really jacked up his right wing. I have never taught him to walk down or up stairs, though, so as to control the destruction should he get through the barriers to freedom. He has an enclosure with his cage in it, but he can do a panic flap OUT of it, and I don't always have my room barricaded off.

The week after we got the carpets put in---after 25 yrs---I came home and saw a drift of carpet fibers in the foyer. I looked up, and there was that little grey head peeping down between the bannister poles. The parents were out of town. I was able to enact repairs, once my heart rate went down.

BOIDS!!!!!

Status: offline 		OMG, a friend of mine decided he wanted some birds. So we went to a pet store and he asked for parakeets, a boy and a girl.

They only had two boy birds, so he brought them home. He became obsessed with building them a parakeet neighborhood, and sort of built a multi level home for them inside of a huge cage.

They were kind of listless so he thought he would go get a girl bird to jazz things up.

Instead, the two boy birds started digging on each other so much, the girl bird was really upset at being left out.

We went out one day and went to check on the birds when we got home and the two boy birds were lying spooning inside of a little cave on top of a hill.

My friend was really upset and I said, what's the problem? It is exactly like Brokebeak Mountain!

I think I had one of the most hurting laughs I have ever had in my life that day. To this day, we love his little gay parakeets.

Saw this a little late, but, for the OP, if you want wood toys that are not easily destroyed see if you can find someone local to you that works with less common woods. Some that will hold up quite well are Ebony and Hard Maple. Have something simple made to keep your bird happy. These will cost a bit more that simple woods commonly used but will last a LOT longer.

Status: offline 		I had a friend who decided that dogs were too deastructive and got a blue and gold Macaw. She also had a rattan coffee table..........for a little while.

I think Hunky meant check freecycle for stuff to MAKE into toys... Jeddie is working on shredding magazines and tax law books, though really that bird should go work for Enron, he is MISTER SHRED.

Different birds like different stuff, too. Jed has no interest in things that are rubbery, like the kongs, but at the dollar store we got all kinds of plastic party favors for him to destroy. The little cars were a special fave, and that's how we found out that he loves the color red and hates the color green!

Status: offline 		OMG, I once had a dog that chewed up the corner of the carpet less than 24 hours after I had it installed. I know what you mean about heart rate...I was sooooooo worried what was going to happen when my ex got home. He took it pretty well though actually.

The ones that we've had for some time is the Goffin (smaller Too) and the Quaker (fearless little Pittbull of the bird world). For Sir's birthday we brought home a Greater Sulphur Crested (big Too). He is an already mature bird that we are taking on because the previous owner developed some major health issues and could no longer keep him.

My biggest concern about bringing him in was whether or not he would do well with the 3 Labs. Thankfully, he doesn't seem to pay them any attention at all though.

Thank you for the suggestions! We do have access to lots of hardwoods such as maple and fruit trees. I wonder if you have to process the wood somehow (kiln dry or something). I seem to remember reading something somewhere regarding using fresh wood in a bird cage...something about parasites. I will have to research that but yes...I am sure that hard wood would slow him down a little.

Awesome ideas, thank you! I just did a bit of quick searching online and found "bird toy parts" that you can buy in larger lots that are very reasonable. This will help a lot.

Status: offline 		Go to the hardware store or the hobby store, buy wood blocks, rope, but be careful nothing was treated,  raw wood is what you want.  Get rope and such, make your own - the bird doesn't particularly care if its shaped like anything special.  Dixie cups are a source of amusements for a bird.  Also, a discarded soda bottle (not the cap of course).  Think recycle before you toss something.
