How common? Quite common? But so are live out situations. And everything in between, the more complicated, probably the less common. The details of the situation vary drastically depending on what fits both parties needs and what they discuss, negotiate, and agree on. And some of the time its open for adjustment as one lives it and learns. This is going to be pretty much the answer to all questions about how people do anything, even in vanilla aspects of life... Except I have found that usually in the BDSM community there is a stronger emphasis on the importance and value of deep, meaningful communication and open discussion. I think a better question might be: "For those that choose to have their partner live-in, what is your dynamic like at home? How did you come to be where you are?" When you are trying to learn about BDSM the forums are a great place to start. So is typing "BDSM information" "BDSM FAQ" or "BDSM resources" into the google search bar... If you type a couple of those things, or other similar topics, and press the "search" button many hundreds of pages of websites will pop up on your screen. If you start browsing each one, reading old forum posts, reading FAQs and info pages... You will learn that there are a LOT of different choices, options, and people doing all kind of things. The more you read the more you will learn what is frequent vs what is more uncommon. This type of research will help you form better questions to get at the heart of what you are trying to learn about. You're going to get a lot more depth of knowledge if you shift your learning approach.
