How many of you live without corporate electricity, with solar, wind, or a gas generator?

After deciding that a wringer washer is the direction to go, finding one in working order became the challenge. One is very old, with some work it can be converted to manual, or maybe a small engine instead of the generator. Still.... not getting clothes washed. Then, bingo.... found an old Maytag wringer washer in mint condition for fifty bucks, and another, exactly the same except for the missing agitator and a wringer, for ten. No more just tossing the clothes in, pushing a button and having clean clothes. That wringer action is awesome, it truly is a joy to do laundry. The simplest things in life can be the most rewarding, nothing should ever be taken for granted.

So, there are four wringer washers in my yard. There are not many wringer washer laundromats, could start one here. Free drying. Someone asked today if I had a "wringer washer fetish." Ouch, that agitator can really mess up somebody's hole, not to mention getting a nipple caught in that wringer.

Does anybody else here still use a wringer washer? The expression "chained to the cook stove" comes to mind.....

Thinking that the wringer washer might be the best invention ever, even better than the chain saw, resulted in questioning which came first, the washing machine or the chain saw? The scrub board, not really a machine with moving parts, invented in 1797. The first rotary washing machine to use a drum, 1851. The first chain saw? 1830. The chain saw came before the washing machine. The first wringers in 1862, electric wringers in 1911. The earliest wringers were separate from the machine and clamp to the drum. I have one of those wringers as well. Life in the big city? Haven't missed it for a minute.

When I was kid living in Texas we used a wringer washer. It sat on our back porch and I remember getting my waist long hair caught in the wringer. God almighty that hurt and it was worse when my mom tried to cut my hair loose. I landed up with pixi short hair that summer.

Ouch!!!!   Hair sounds a good deal more painful then me getting stupid as a 7 year old and getting my right arm stuck in the wringer up to my elbow.  I remember the incident pretty well but I can not remember just how long I was stuck.

My grandpa used to have a saying, something like, "We haven't had this much fun since Grandma got her tit caught in the wringer washer....."

I think I'd rather beat the clothes on a rock down at the river.

I beat my clothes with a rock on the shore of the river.

LOL.

I did 3 loads of laundry-- it sure is slow drying. I own a dryer but I hang the clothes out.

I used wringer washers for years when my kids were little. Even after I got a newer regular one I used the wringer more. It got clothes cleaner and I could save water by using the rinse water as wash water by adding more soap, for things like, rugs or my ex's filthy work clothes.

I would love to have another!

I don't, I never have but I do own one.  I dragged it halfway across the country when we moved.

Want to buy another?  Ours is antique but not quite as antique as no electricity at all.  It does have power for the wringer.

Initially, the wringer didn't work on the Maytag. An internet search resulted in learning that some models had a foot air pump which triggered the wringer. Was wondering what that little hose is for. Removed the hose and it's attachment, inserted a bolt in the hole, and it works wonderfully.

I leaned in too far and got a boob smushed pretty good in one.  Thankfully, it had a safety thing that shut it off and popped the rollers apart pretty quickly.   I had one bruised boob for a while.
