I'm going to make one of these tomorrow and give it a try. I'll post about it if it works.... if it doesn't, I never saw this thread. [8D]

Hey now, it actually turned out pretty good on Sunday. And yet you never got back to this thread. Harrumph! [>:]

i like cooking underground...

dig a hole, add some charcoal and light, when coals turn grey, put meat or veges wrapped in foil in hole, or cast iron dutch oven...

a few hours later, uncover hold and unveil some of the tastiest food that ever crossed your lips!

Greetings all.....

This is not exactly what the OP is looking for but close enough. This is from my scouting days and counts as things I learned from my mother. (65 years in Girl Scouts)

It does require a small fire, say six inches in diameter, a dixie cup, a small paper lunch bag and a stick. Also a couple of strips of bacon and a raw egg and some water. Start the fire, flames are just fine, punch a small hole in one end of the egg, put water in the dixie cup, the egg in the cup so it is in the water, the cup in the fire. Then put the bacon in the sack, the stick through the top of the sack to support it and hold the paper sack over (not in) the flames while the bacon fries. in about 3-4 minutes the egg will be hard boiled, the bacon fried, the sack greasy but unburnt and the top of the dixie cup burnt to the water line. Enjoy breakfast. <grins>

Yes, I have done this. Add a piece of bread which you just eat while cooking the rest of the food and of course, just one match to light the fire. The last time I did this took about twenty-thirty minutes from gathering the wood to putting out the fire. I had been practicing. <grins> Your time will vary.

Be well.....

Malinkinius, that does sound fun, Daddy probably wouldn't let me cook like that though, he wouldn't trust me to be safe with the fire probably  thinks I am a little fire bug, lol.

But, I could chalk it up to "but Daddy I am cooking your breakfast"

Fire wasn't a problem for me. Our scout troop had a few unofficial positions and one of mine was troop pyromaniac. <grins> I have rebuilt council fires that Scout Leaders built which didn't light properly. They burnt very well for me. <grins>

Be well....

FR

I have cooked steaks with cut potatoes and rice using my tractor trailer. I had heard of people cooking on the engines manifold so I decided to try it. Worked just fine. If it's a cold winter day and were going to idle the truck anyway. You need aluminum foil and food. It goes back to a time when drivers did not have crock pots and cookers. You get stuck in Wyoming for a week away from a truck stop and you will cook any way you can.

Well its not quite cooking but I was reading an article on life hacking and I saw something interesting I thought i'd try. If you take a warm can of whatever you drink (soda, beer, v8) and put it in a container that includes ice, water and salt, cover for 3 minutes and the can comes out ice cold.

Wouldn't the ice alone take care of that? Lol. Or is there more to it than that.?

You would think so but thats sort of like a temporary cold like the first few sips are cold and then nothing but lukewarmness. Not entirely sure how that works but the salt and water just act like a catalyst I guess.

Personally, I think electric rice cookers are the greatest. Brown rice is the staple of my diet. I throw in some carrots, sweet potoatoes, or other root vegtables, and cook them with the rice, or throw some greens, like collard greens or kale, on top of the rice for the last 15 minutes. After the divorce I bought an old wreck of a house, and didn't have a stove for 7 months. The electric rice cooker and a hot plate worked admirably for me.

I can't imagine NOT having a stove...I have all the cooking gadgets mentioned, 3 crockpots, rice cooker, Foreman grill, but still, if I decide to cook big, the stove is where it's at.  I wouldn't get any apartment without the stove.  Plus, I haven't figured out how to make a double batch of cookies with anything else but an oven!  I love BBQ'ing, tho.....and cook up a storm on that!  Charcoal...not propane......gotta have that taste and smell!

There are too many places to get a used stove at to not have one.....but I love my crock pot for soups, stews and chili......and yeah, in the summer I tend not to use the stove much cuz of the heat issue, but I will use it once in a while....did tonight, in fact.....any one want a peanut butter cookie?

When I left home at 17,  I moved into this one room - It had a skillet type thing that you plugged in and you could cook with a pan or whatever on it.  Well that broke,  my friend was over, starving with me, and we did the bread and cheese wrapped in a piece of aluminum foil- and we ironed it!!!!  It was the best grilled cheese I ever had, I think because we were starving and made the best of what we had.   - If there's a will there's a way.

Ahhh... but I am a vegan, I eat no meat, dairy or sugar, so doing without a stove was not really a hardship. I did buy one after I moved my mother in, she does not share my eating habits.

When 1st moving to Maryland we lived in an effeciency for about 6 mths and I learned to cook ALOT in a mirocrowave. Including pastas and various b'fast items. I even managed to cook a whole small turkey in the mircrowave. Lol I couldn't use an indoor grill, slow cookerl or anything of that nature b/c it was not permitted due to the fuses.

I also really enjoy cooking on the grill, regardless of the weather. (again including b'fast)

TribeTziyon -> RE: What are your favorite ways to cook with out an oven? (8/28/2010 5:42:10 PM)

Lavina, I remember once a friend and I were hungry, and her house was almost always empty of  groceries, but they did have spaghetti and a can of tomato sauce, an even though tomato sauce out of the can is gross, we ate it anyway, cause dammit we were hungry.
